2.8 weight gain overnight Why?!

Hello,
Finally, decided to start living healthy and cut the weight eating right.
I started changing my habits 4 weeks ago and started at 222 and dropped to 209 (as of last Friday) (5/7 Height). I refrain from drinking weekdays, but went a bit HAM on Saturday.
By Sunday, I gained 2.8 lbs. I ate fairly unhealthily, but not 3,500 x3 bad.
I ran 2 miles in am, had a grilled chicken salad for lunch (vinaigrette dressing), then 2 yellow shots, gases of Sangria, 2 Pisco Sours (egg whites / mezcal), and Paella for dinner about 10 ounce Portion (shrimp, clam muscles). I know that all this food is prob 3,500 but doesn't quite seem to be as much as I gained.
Frustrating to see such a set back on one day. Does alcohol somehow effect weight loss in a more substantial way than calories?
Looking forward to your thoughts.
Best regards,
Dave

Alcohol can lead to water retention which amounts to temporary weight gain. Also, it is normal for weight to fluctuate over the course of a day/week. I wouldn't get too hung up on what the scale says unless it hasn't moved down in a few weeks (and definitely don't worry about it over the course of a day). I have dropped 2 pounds overnight before, I would guess your gain has more to do with the alcohol than anything. Make sure you log everything you eat or drink so you know for sure the number of calories and then just have patience. I don't even weigh everyday. I weigh on Sunday and that is it.2

Most likely is sodium causing water retention. It will go back in a few days if you keep the sodium in check at least that is usually what it is from my experience.3

Most likely bloating/water retention, but hey even if you relapsed a little and gained 3 lbs that doesn't undo everything you've done. Go easy on yourself, sometimes a little backslide happens. I just hope you had a great time!2

Seconded.3 -
water weight...
but you really need to sort out your calories and eat at a more reasonable deficit before you do yourself some serious damage.1 -
It really does mess with your head when knowing it's water weight, those darn 3-5 lbs on the scale is a real bummer! Then it takes almost 4-5 days for me to lose it again.. maybe next time think before you cheat or over-indulge?0

Like others have said, it's water retention from the food that your eating. After my 4th of July BBQ, I gained almost 4 pounds. I lost all that weight within 3 days or so.

Hang in there, water weight, regardless where it comes from, is crazy. Had a bad reaction myself at weigh-in this morning-- was expecting to see a loss (this is the time of the week where my weight consistently dips) and was +2.2lbs. Was initially very confused (and irritated). I'm a creature of habit (I generally eat the same planned meals everyday) and I was well within my calorie goal yesterday... Then I remembered: I added 3oz lasco smoked salmon to my meal yesterday since it was on sale at the store. Not something I usually buy. I go to grab the nutrition info box in recycling... 1000mg of new sodium that I added to my usual sodium intake yesterday with just 90 cals of salmon. I should have caught that and adjusted. That's how we learn I guess! Keep at it. (Btw, I drink alcohol daily---I fit a glass of wine or a drink into my cal goal---and it has not stopped my weight loss).1

Weigh yourself daily and you'll see fluctuations like this all the time. My 1 month weight graph is all over the place from 125 to 131. Yesterday I was 129.4 and this morning I'm 127.2. There are numerous reasons for this - sometimes I am very swollen and retaining a lot of inflammatory water weight from intense lifting. I take a deload day, drink a lot of water, take motrin and foam roller and sure enough will be down 3 pounds the next day.

Oh man, I just posted about this same thing. I also started on this journey 4 weeks ago, so to see the scale jump up is a REAL bummer. The consensus on my thread is it's likely water weight and that it should get better soon. Hang in there! I'm right there with you!0

It is also likely that your initial loss of 13 lbs in 4 weeks included fluid shifts and your body is restoring that balance. That is not uncommon when someone starts a program, esp if they are restricting calories a lot at the beginning.3

I recently spent a few days out of town for a wedding and due to restaurant food, I gained 6 pounds but I stayed within, or at least close to, my calories and it all came back off in a few days. 2.8 pounds is well within normal fluctuations.0

Lost it all already. Sorry for tr post. Thanks for the insight2
