hi folks
just wondering how much weight people lost before they went down a size in clothes if they are "plus size"? (i understand inches more important than weight especially when working out, but i just was wondering!)

At 25lbs XXXL clothing got pretty baggy. Work clothing I haven't dropped in size yet but likely could. Workout clothing I did drop in size as keeping shorts up became an issue.
I lost weight from calves, forearms, face, and neck first. My hips are down a little and gut is still not budging much. You could lose in different areas first. So how clothing fits and weight loss can be pretty different per person.2 -
It's different for each person... The average I think is 15 to 25 pounds. For me it was closer to 50 before I dropped a size.7

I just recently dropped close to 30 lbs and I'm still in the same size. The clothes are lose but the size down doesn't quite fit just yet. I probably also should've been in a bigger size to start but I couldn't bring myself to buy the bigger clothes.9

Im almost at 30 pounds and it depends on the clothes, some of my old clothes still fit, some dont. I went down about two sizes in some pants for work, and a size down in tops, currently most of my clothes are in this awkward stage of not looking good anymore, but also not looking super baggy. I was kind of on the line for plus size though, I had a few 16's and 14's in pants, and I have a pair of size 10 pants that fit, but most of my pants right now that fit well are 12's2

I started at 375 and Im down to 335. Clothes are looser but I havent bought a new size. Its pretty frustrating. But plus size clothing is so stretchy and so much room difference. Hoping it happens soon.9

25 lbs I dropped from a 14/16 to a 12/14, which is pretty loose. Depends on your body composition tho, I carry most of my fat in my tum so pants are much looser but I am still wearing all the same tops at this point.

I read some place about five years ago (when I first started this journey) that for about every 10 pounds you loose, you "should" go down a size. I'm sure that's a rough estimate, but it's some kind of guide, at least. Hope that helps!2

Great question, which I was wondering too!! I am feeling impatient to go down a size. Have lost 20 pounds since April but am in most of the same clothes. My stomach and hips have shrunk some so that clothes fit better. Still have not gone down a size. I think each body loses in different ways and places. My height is 5'6". I walk almost every day.0

Maybe 5 pounds? I lose inches faster than pounds so I'm down a pants size every 3 weeks or so.0

When I started I wore size 18 jeans at 233lbs. I am 5'7.5" tall. Now, I am 186lbs and in a size 12 jeans. And went from 2X tops to now XL. It seemed like it took forever to go down a size, but once it started it happens pretty quickly, I have already gotten several size 10 at the thrift store to be ready.3

When I started at 374lb I was a size 28, now at 295lb I'm in a 228

It took me a good 20 or so pounds to go down one pant size (18 to a 16) and my 18's were not tight. I did lose a lot of inches, but my thighs2

i've lost 28lbs and am just starting to notice that although my size 18 jeans are still TECHNICALLY wearable, the legs of them are getting baggy so i feel them flap when i'm walking (they used to be a good snug/confortable fit) and i do have to hike them up throughout the day a fair bit. i'm still not comfortable when i wear the size 16 jeans (still feel a bit uncomfortably snug) i'm kind of in between at the moment~3

I hear you I refuse to go up in size for clothes as well. Im also to the point where I WONT spend large some of money on any one piece of clothing as well. Im fed up with this weight.0 -
I'm so glad you posted this question! All of the comments are so encouraging. I've lost 18 pounds and my pant legs are quite loose, but the waist still fits just fine1

I started at 288 - 2-3XL tops, size 22-24 pant.
I'm down to 251... XL-1XL shirts and found a stretchy pair of size 18 blue jean capri's that fit!
I think it depends where you loose the weight first......... for me it was the stomach... I now have a waist again.
On the other hand, I swear I haven't lost an oz. off my butt yet.
I'm hoping the next 35 lbs or so will come off that area.
Hang in there..... it seems like forever when your in the middle of it, but in reality it can happen faster than you think.2 -
50 and even then I probably had no business in the smaller size but I was NOT going to buy the same size anymore. Previously losing weight I was larger and lost sizes very quickly. Even at a higher weight I was a much smaller size but this time around hasn't been like that at all.0

For me I go down a size every 20 lbs or so when I'm over 200. Under 200 it's about 10 lbs per size. I'm 5'10 and apple shaped

It seems to be about 20 lbs per size for me, but sizes are irregular in different brands so it's hard to tell. I started at a tight 28 and about 270, lost weight from an illness without really noticing at the time, but those clothes were too big by the time I came home from the hospital at about 250. Probably wore a 24 or 26 but didn't buy clothes so no idea. Then started deliberately trying to lose and was a 22 / 20 at 230, now 192 in 14 / 16.0

I'm 30lbs down and have gone down a size in tops, bottoms I'm just about down a size - I've gone from my current size being slightly too tight to almost too loose. Although I admit it may have been a bit of denial before and I probably should have worn the larger size....
Can't wait to be officially in the smaller size. I'm hoping another 5-10lbs will do it.1 -
I think it was about 10lbs for me. I've lost 40 so far and have gone from a 26 to a 18 in pants, although the 18 is still a bit snug. With shirts, I've only gone down one size so far - from a 3x to a 2x.0

I think it really depends on size of.... what? I go down in shirt sizes before I do in pants. Just the way my body sheds the weight.0

In my case I went from a 2x to a 4x the first week. I took my measurements and apparently I had been pushing my poor stretch pants to their limits. After that initial shock it took me about 20 pounds to get into a proper fitting 3x, another 20 for 2x/xxl, then things started getting weird. I lost another 20 pounds and could fit into xl shorts, but was still wearing xxl tops. My 2x clothes had become unflattering though. I've been stuck at this weight for 3 months, exercising but eating too much, and now the xl shirts fit me, but I'm back in xxl shorts.0

I've lost about 25 and Haven't dropped a size yet. My clothes just fit wayyyyy better lol although, when i buy Targets plus size clothes I use to have to go up a size since their stuff was always cut small but now I can wear my normal size in their clothes lol not technically dropping a size but still..1

I was 263 lbs to start at 5'4" and busting out of size 20 (probably was truly a 22/24 depending on cut) and 2x/3x tops (again depending on cut).
I've lost almost 67 lbs and am now in size 14 and L/XL. My waist is shrinking slower than the rest of me so whenever it whooshes is when I tend to drop sizes.2 -
The larger the size, the more pounds you need to lose to drop a size. It's a basic geometry problem. Imagine a baseball and a golf ball. Now scoop a tablespoon out of each of them. The golf ball will have diminished in size A LOT but the baseball hardly at all. The same is true with us. When I weighed over 300 lbs I could take 20-40 lbs off and really people could barely notice and clothing size didn't really change much (I lost 60 lbs before my friends were sure enough that I was reducing that they got comfortable asking me what was going on). Now I'm down to a more healthy weight and if I gain or lose 10 lbs it makes a big difference and I'll drop 1, sometimes 2 sizes.
While I was losing weight the first several months, keeping myself clothed wasn't an issue. But after a while I had to get real darned strategic about buying things to tide me over though transitionary sizes because my size was changing more rapidly and I didn't want to waste money.9 -
I've lost about 70 lbs.
I dropped 10 pants sizes. (48 to 38)(48=46=44=42=40=38)
The rate was pretty steady.
So I guess it was every 7 to 10 lbs or so.
My pants have to fit so the last set I had to buy 5 pair but before that I had stored all the 5pair sets from 40 to 48.
My weight loss was steeper in the beginning but in mens clothing there is a huge dividing line between 40s and 38s so in 200 days of dieting most of the size reductions were in the upper sizes with the 40s holding out the longest.
I am in 38s about 10 to 12 days.
38 is where most mens stores end and 40 is where the big and tall stores start. At walmart you are charged 2 to 3 dollars more for 40 and up. Quite a difference when you hold a 38 up to a 40 it isn't just one pant size.
