Hi all,

I'm trying to lose some prednisone weight, I've been on and off of it for years and put on (you guessed it) 46lbs I've been off it a week but my appetite is still huge. Before I got sick I was always very very thin, too thin probably so initially I was delighted to put on a few pounds but it kept on piling on and only for photographs I wouldn't have noticed for a while longer. I'm very new to dieting and there's a lot of diets out there which is very confusing. I'm not able to do a whole lot at the moment but in the coming weeks I hope to be able to exercise more. Has anyone got any advice on how to shed the steroid pounds?

Many thanks

  • Hello,
I can totally relate to your frustration. I had a steroid shot last summer and a round of prednisone and gained 15 pounds in about 4 months. My doctor kept saying it doesn't cause weight gain but that's just simply not true. It seems to be mostly water weight as I noticed I just looked puffier, especially in the face. I have finally lost it after working out like a maniac since April. I noticed that once I started working out heavily, I started sweating more than I ever had in my life. I'm thinking I was losing all that water weight. My advice is to just sweat out as much as possible through tons of cardio. (as soon as you're able) Definitely drink a ton of water and really watch your sodium and especially MSG. Best of luck!

Oh I wish I read that before tucking into the doritos haha. Thanks for your advice I'll def be hitting the gym when I'm up to it even if it is only a bit of teadmill walking I can manage. Do you know I read an article online which says that it not only causes weight gain but changes the way your body distributes fat so that it mostly deposits around the neck and abdomen. I can vouch for that, it's very true. What a nightmare! I'm kind of hoping that one morning I'll just wake up skinny again haha it took about 3 years to put on the 46lbs I really hope it doesnt take 3 years to lose! But I won't let it get me down I have some friends who've been on the same treatment and have gained 80+ lbs so I am considering myself lucky. I need to lose it because I'll probably be back on that treatment again before the year is out and I don't want to climb any higher on the scales 180lbs my limit and I know each time I'm on it I start piling on the weight so if I lose it now I won't worry about gaining a few lbs later. It's just so had to get started on a diet sometimes! Best of luck with your challenge too! :D
