How to measure food

edited September 2024 in Food and Nutrition
Like Chicken, a serving is 4 ounces (usually) how do I figure that out? And I have a measuring cup for 1 Cup, 1/2 Cup, 1/4 cup etc., but it doesn't seem like much as all. How do I know what the best serving is?

Invest in a food scale. It's the best tool in my kitchen!

I got the digital biggest loser food scale and it is amazing. Measures in ounces and grams. It was only $20 at Bed Bath and Beyond.

Yup, get a food scale. I got one for about $20 from target. Works well and is a great investment.

There are some good tips here, when you can't get to a scale:

Yes, measure whatever you can in grams. Most foods listed on MFP have different options to select for measurements.. cups, tbls or grams.

I use a scale as everyone else said... I also buy specific size containers... like 1 cup -- so that way I can put more fluid type things in and not worry too much about measuring. I think I have 50 little 1 cup tupperware bowls that I pretty much eat every meal out of... how sad is that? Also -- use salad plates instead of dinner plates, your brain with think you're eating more than you are :)

I have a food scale and has become my best friend. I measure a lot of my foods now and it gives you an idea how much a portion really is. The biggest shocker for me was measuring pasta, believe me 2 ounces is a very small amount, but that is what I eat now.

Until you get a food scale, and if you don't click on the link someone posted, 4 oz. of meat is about the size of a deck of cards, or the palm of a "normal" sized woman's hand (which is to say, smaller than a man's hand).

I use my scale everyday! One of the best investments in my health I ever bought.

I have one similar to #22. It has food already programmed in it and you can see the nutritional labels come up. Pretty cool, but not totally necessary.
