Hunger and Extreme Sickness

Hello, I have been experiencing extreme hunger and sickness some nights to the point of painful headaches and vomiting. I am a night owl but eating after a certain time is something I try to avoid. Although I may eat some fruit or something, it makes it worse. I believe I allow myself to get hungry before eating at night. Has anyone else experienced this and what are some ways to keep myself from being so hungry late at night.

Are you eating any different foods or larger quantities of some foods? Some raw vegetables (carrots and green peppers) make me sick which I didn't realize until I started eating more of them dieting.

Can you change your bedtime back to what it was when you weren't experiencing unreasonable hunger? If you can't trouble shoot what's changed and is causing this you really should see a doctor -- getting sick from going a few hours without food is not normal.

How long did you go between eating and going bed before you changed your bedtime? Try moving your last meal a bit later so that you have the same amount of time as you did previously. If you're timing your meals for IF, you can always put off the first meal of the day a little longer.

No strangely I'm eating less of Every thing. You do have a point, I don't think it's normal either.

Not alot, but a lot more. I'm wondering if maybe my metabolism has been on overdrive lately.

It's always about 9 hrs between eating and sleep, but I get sick only about 4 hours after

How many hours do you typically go between meals? It would be a helpful guideline.

Yeah I'd agree with the above - that is not normal. Nor good for you, honestly.

If you are exercising a lot, could be your metabolism has increased enough that you are getting too low blood sugar, maybe even almost hypoglycemic, after too long without food. Might be worth looking up the symptoms and seeing if that tracks. I believe headaches and nausea/vomiting were on the list for hypoglycemia, at least.

Honestly, while I know you don't want to, I'd consider simply adding in a snack later, maybe 3-3 1/2 hours later, just enough time before you get sick for you to digest food and for it to hit your blood stream. If that works...it was likely your blood sugar was dropping too low. If that is NOT it, then you may want to see a doc, just in case something else is going on.

Or also a random thing - were you ever tested for celiac disease? Some folks experience weight gain from the disease (but many doctors look for outdated symptoms, like everyone ONLY getting weight loss). Many times, there can be damage and problems for years before the more 'classic' symptoms show up. And with this, what happens is that your body stops absorbing the nutrients it should (even while gaining weight. It's crazy, seriously), and so when you diet, your body, which is literally having starvation issues sometimes, is suddenly getting even LESS of what it needs, and so you can have a serious problem trying to lose weight through calorie restriction.

Admittedly, this is a bit of a long shot, but if you have any family members with auto-immune disorders, you have a higher risk of having this. And if you can't figure out the problem, it might be worth checking with a doc about a blood test, perhaps.

HIIT gives me intense hunger. Have you always done it? You don't need to avoid eating after a certain time. It's okay to eat late if you're staying up late. Obviously your current food schedule is not working, maybe it's time to experiment with a different schedule? You don't need to stay married to the idea of limiting your intake to certain hours, as long as your calories are on point you should be able to eat whenever you choose.

I tend to graze rather than eat meals - so normally no more than about 2-3hrs - but that is what works for me

I was getting nauseous at the beginning of using MFP. Someone on the forums suggested eating more protein and a little fat, and that helped. Don't let yourself get so hungry you get headaches. Maybe your snack could be an apple and cheese, a piece of toast with half an avocado smashed up on it, one or two eggs scrambled or boiled. If you're vomiting still, be sure to drink some Gatorade to replace the electrolytes. And see your doctor! Something is seriously amiss.
