Why does my weight fluctuate so much?

Okay, I know water weight will make the number in the scale go up and down...but, mine literally bounces 8lbs at a time. (Within just a few hours). Is that normal? I know 2lbs or 3lbs is normal, but, is 8lbs-10lbs normal?

Water weight plus what is now in your system after you eat/drink. Definitely normal. Don't weigh yourself more than once a day or it will drive you crazy.

I'm not a doctor, but this doesn't seem shocking? Like @malibu927 said, only weigh yourself once a day (or less), and remember to always do it around the same time of day.

Cheap scale, weak batteries? I know weight fluctuations are normal, but 8-10 lbs seems excessive.

Why are you weighing yourself so often? Put the scale away if normal fluctuations bother you - even if they don't, weighing multiple times a day is excessive and doesn't really provide any useful information as that's not actual weight loss/gain.

    1. is the scale in the same place
    2. are you standing on it in the same way
    3. how much do you weigh 8-10 lbs for a 300 lb person isn't the same fluctuation as for a 146 lb person
    4. digital or analog

    Is the floor flat.

Plus with women (assuming they haven't reached menopause) hormonal changes fluctuate with the monthly cycle. Water retention is one most women are familiar with regarding this.

With any diet water weight also fluctuates if you are varying carbohydrate intake (a source of water when broken down into substrates or burnt for fuel).

It's good to have a couple feedback tools in addition to the scale. Measuring waist is one. For women hips are good (not usually as good for us men). Just make sure you focus on consistent technique, esp. not pulling the tape measure tight. Remember, there's a degree of variation here too.

Long term over short term focus. Is the trend generally in the right direction? Then you're making progress. If not, tighten something up, but be aware that plateaus are also normal to go through & require you not get discouraged & give up.

Scale placement, food, hormones, water, sodium and water retention, exercise and water retention.. sweating more one day than the other. If your weight overall is going down try not to worry about the ups and downs of the scale

You're mostly made of water, and water comes and goes. 8lb seems a lot, but it's not a big percentage of your whole body weight.

Also, your scales are probably messing with you. I know mine do. Mainly because I don't store them flat. They get worse when the battery starts going.

Do not weight yourself every day, once a wk at the same time and day is the way it should be done. Mine is on a Saturday morning at 8am
