Elliptical Calorie Counter

So I realize that most exercise machines are not going to give you an exact calorie count, but I seriously don't think mine is acurate at all. If I do 30 minutes at a pretty steady rate (11-12 mph according to the machine) it says that I burn around 120 calories??? According to MFP 30 minutes on an elliptical is around 430 or somewhere around there. I don't know what to go with. Any advice?

Yeah, I don't think that your elliptical machine is accurate. Are you moving at a pace where you're sweating a lot? At the gym, I usually burn around 400 calories doing the elliptical machine for 30 minutes. Which is around what MFP says. If I were you I would invest in a good hear rate monitor to wear while you're on your machine. That way you don't have any confusion.0

The Elliptical that I use asks me to enter my weight at the beginning of the workout and calculates my calories that way. Does it have that option? When all else fails, invest in a heart rate monitor0

umm... i would defintely say that's off.... 20 minutes on my elliptical says about 350 calories... it really depends on your speed and resistance used... i start off at 1, like the programmer does... and i go to about 4 and then i crank it up to 7 or 8 at about 10 minutes in and keep it there, and i get 320-360 calories... i know it isnt accurate, but a half hour should be much more than that0

Mine at the same speed ranges 360-400 per half hour0

I think that a counter like the MFP counter takes into account your current weight were as many (especially non industrial) ellipticals do not. I know that mine says around 200 or so for a half hour when MFP says its over 4000

MFP takes into account Heigh, Age and Weight. Even when the tlliptical asks, it only take into account age and weight. If its one at home it may just be funky, if its one at the gym well those machines get alot of use! I use LA fitness and one location is great about maintaining their machines, another location closer to my sons daycare (slightly lower income are, we live on the cusp of 4 phoenix "cities") is horrible about it, I like that their treadmills have personal fans but half are broken which is really depressing0
