I'm in the market for some new running shoes. Anybody have any go-tos? I'm looking for a specific pair that people can recommend, not just a brand.

Go to a good running store and have them analyze your gait. My favorite running shoe might be a nightmare for you, we have no idea of your particular needs.

Didn't even realize gait analysis was a thing. What's a good store that does this since I've never seen it? I usually get my shoes online.

You will just have to do some research and find the best running stores in your area. In St. Louis, Fleet Feet is a good one and I know they have them in Chicago also. Truth be told, though, I've had to buy them, try them and take them back more than once even from a good running store. New Balance is my fave also and I bought my first pair of those from a New Balance store who didn't even watch me run. So make sure wherever you buy them has a good return policy too!

As you're in Boston it looks like Heartbreak Hill Running Company or Marathon Sports would be your best bets. I know the Running Room does the gait analysis, but so should most other running stores.

Go to a running store, not just a sports store at the mall. Call first and make sure they do gait analysis. After you get fitted properly and know what works for you, ordering online is pretty easy. I got fitted for Mizuno wave creation. When my weight changed and I had knee issues, I changed to a mild stability shoe of the same brand, Mizuno wave inspire. I order last year's model and save $$.

I also suggest a gait analysis. Make sure that the store will allow you to test run the shoe for a while. Even though gait analysis is reliable, sometimes the shoe may not be ideal for you, so you may need to return it and try a different pair. Some stores will allow you to do that. I use the Asics Gel Venture 5, they are in the version 6 right now, but I have two brand new pairs in boxes that I have at home.

Depends what ind of running you do.

I have road shoes, light trail shoes, moderate trail shoes, moderate trail shoes with a higher elevation and goretex for winter running and extreme trail shoes.

My favourites are the last pair, but they have minimal drop, no cushioning and very aggressive tread so wouldn't really be suitable for a beginning runner.

    fwiw mine are all Inov-8

I completely agree with the running store advice. I'll just add my normal "ignore brand recommendations" blurb. You will no doubt get a few and I can tell you from past posts like this that many of the ones recommended are the same ones I hate. Once size does not fit all.

    Good luck.

Go to a good running store, get there advice and try on lots of shoes. Choose comfort over style.

And once you have had all that advice from the store - BUY FROM THE STORE. Don't walk away with some pitiful excuse and search on the internet for the shoes you just had recommended.

My husband doesn't run, but he walks. He's always trying to copycat me with his walking shoes and never ends up happy.

Moral of the story? Different people have different needs.

I went to Fleet Feet and had a gait analysis done when I first started running. Saying that, I've since switched to minimalist shoes and wear something completely different than what I started with.

That analysis was worth it. I also agree with the advice to buy from the store.

Nthing the suggestion to get a gait analysis done. I'm brand new to running and once I was sure I was going to stick with it I had it done. My running shoes are the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned!

Different shoes fit differently. Brooks fit me great and the Ghosts suit me. OTOH, they are too narrow for my son, who goes to the Asics for a comfy fit. The only way to do it is to get out and try a bunch of stuff on. Go with the brand that is comfy right from the start - you shouldn't have to break them in. And, I will buck the trend on the gait analysis. The running store people see you for a minute and half of them don't know squat. Chances are they'll tell you that you need a support shoe. Go with a neutral shoe and run in it for a while. See how it wears. Tread wear is a MUCH more reliable way to see what type of gait you have. (Also, if you over-pronate, you are way better off working on the muscles and gait than you are relying on a pair of clunky support shoes to "fix" it for you.) JMO
