Nursing and dieting

I just started MFP this week and haven't lost at all. I thought for sure that the first week would show some significant movement on the scale. [sigh] (MFP shows - 4 pounds but that is because I put in the incorrect beginning weight and don't know how to change it)
Anyway, I am also nursing my 4 month old and was wondering if this would have anything to do with it. My baby still seems very satisfied so I don't think I am having problems with not meeting the caloric goals to keep production up. I've also been drinking about 3/4 of a gallon of water each day ~ 12 cups. So, I was at LEAST looking for some water weight to be gone.
So, anyone have any ideas as to what's up?

I'm going on 10 months of nursing I'm just now getting through my plateau. For some the weight falls off - not for me. I've really had to be strict with my diet/exercise to see results!

I nursed my baby for 5 months and I lost my pregnancy weight effortlessly until I got down to the last 10lbs. Then I had to start dieting (after I weaned her.)0

Okay, I THINK I made it public.
Routine??? ha ha ha - what routine? Nah, really, I've only exercised twice this week. Once wed, once today (that I haven't logged yet). I plan to up that to 4 times a week but finding time for twice was hard enough for this first week.
I also wanted to say that my pregnancy weight is gone. I lost all the "baby weight" effortlessly within the first 3 weeks. The rest of this stuff is MINE [shame shame shame] I don't know that it matters if it's pregnancy weight or not... but thought I'd include that fact.0 -
I've only been at this a few weeks myself, so I am by no means an expert, but I am noticing not many veggies, a lot of pre-packaged meals, and few but large calorie meals. One thing that helped me was every time the baby ate, I'd eat. The biggest thing was eating good/colorful veggies and fruits carrots, celery, melons, etc instead of high-fat "easy" stuff. The more white the food is the the fewer nutrients there are in it. Plus then, your baby will get used to tasting the veggies in your milk and will make introducing those thing later a LOT easier. I can TOTALLY vouch for that.

Amanda, I've been eating at least 5 veggies a day. They are usually added into my mail meals. Like last night I made spaghetti and added zuchini, squash, eggplant, etc into it. I jusst didn't log each one separately because... well... I have 3 kids under 5... LOL
Most of my meals this week have been "homemade with help" Like the Ramen noodles - I just used a portion of the noodles (not the pack of seasoning) to go with some freshly steamed brocollli.
I wasn't planning on sharing my food journal - so a bunch of the foods look like packaged foods b/c it was the best quick estimate for what was being chucked into the pot.
Jen, Thanks for the kellymom link. I'm going to check it out now. The concept of adding 300 more calories just baffles me though. How can weighloss NOT occur at 1200 cal/day but WILL occur at 1500? Humm..... off to read. Thanks!0 -
I totally get the not adding everything, I only have 1 and I can only get on here during work! New mom, full time job, hour commute each way...there is a reason I relied on prepackaged meals. So that is awesome you are getting veggies. The next suggestion would be fiber. Like brown rice instead of the ramen. It doesn't take that much longer and has a bunch more fiber. Other sources would be beans, nuts, whole grain bread, even berries, oatmeal (which BTW helps with milk production, although be careful with the instant stuff having a TON of sugar), and my favorite popcorn (sans a ton of salt, butter and other fats).
As far as sharing the diary. I wasn't gonna share mine but realized that if I was being honest on my diary, I could actually look back and figure out why I was or wasn't losing. Plus my MFP pals offer a voice of reason if I have a bad day. It helps knowing that they won't judge, but want to encourage better food choices. So far, so good. 7 weeks, 18.6 pounds.0 -
I'm told nursing burns 500 calories a day, so I would eat 1,700 calories at the minimum (I wouldn't doubt it if you couldn't find nursing under exercise and log it, so it shows the calories burned). I just upped my calories from 1,200 to 1,580 (I don't nurse) because I had hit a plateau and the scale has started moving down again!0
