Rising Cholesteral Tests while losing weight...similar experience?

Just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced Rising Cholesterol while losing weight. I started in Feb with a total Cholesteral of 267 and now 50 lbs loss and total Cholesterol is 309.

And the HDL's are too low and the LDL's are too high and I even had the LDL detail test which showed that the high levels of LDL I have are made of mostly of the better type of particles.

I'm doing TONS of both Cardio and Lifting and eating High Protein and Fats with low carbs. Not eating much read meat and for the most part have stopped things like Salami and Bacon and working to include more fish. And yes taking Fish oil, Niacin, CLA. Doctor is super happy with the weight loss and I've got 20 to 30 lbs more to go so he says get the rest of the weight off and we'll worry about the Cholesteral then. He's not a fan of statins as it's shown to have muscle wasting properties and I'm into weight lifting so that's a bad combination.

Just curious if anyone has experienced the same and if their Cholesteral returned to normal once they stopped losing weight?

One time I took a chol test that was off the charts (50+ up). I don't know what happened and i wonder if it was the avocados and eggs/cheese (it shouldn't) (the day before) or the spaghetti w/ garlic bread and whiskey I had the night before. I can't believe that one night can screw up the numbers that bad. Curious, what did you eat the night before?

I had exactly that happen. I cut out all animal products for a month to see what would happen and my cholesterol dropped way down. And I should say that my diet was really healthy before, lots of fruit and veggies, little red meat etc. I guess I'm just one of those folks who is sensitive to saturated fat.

So when you lose weight, the fat released from your fatty tissue. It doesn't have anywhere to go but the blood stream, causing a temporary rise in cholesterol. It will drop back down with time. (I read this awhile ago and am trying to find the source.)

Make sure you are getting lots of Whole grains, like plain oatmeal, plain popcorn, brown rice, quonia, and whole grain pasta, fruit and veggies because diets high in these have been linked to lower cholesterol levels and lower risk of heart disease.

It can also be that because of exercise and weight loss, your testosterone has increased and this can affect your LDL (raise it).

Do you have family history ( parents or grandparents) of high cholesterol? Genetics is the highest risk factor. If yes, you have to work harder than the average person to keep your LDL and Total cholesterol lower. You can try a low cholesterol diet. Google Mayo Clinic or Cleveland Clinic low cholesterol diet for diet details and ask your doctor to recheck your levels in 3 months. Make sure you fast for the recommended 10 hours prior to getting your lipid panel checked. I know you mentioned fish oil capsule, if you haven't already this you can also ask your doctor if it's okay for you to take Fish Oil capsules 1000mg up to 3 times a day.

I lost 80 lbs and my cholesterol got worse :(

Still not sure what a 'low cholesterol' diet is except oatmeal and nuts. My doctor said to eat fat free everything, which is seriously never going to happen.

Yes. Three years ago, eating horrible diet, no exercise, 130 pounds overweight - cholesterol is fine. Had it checked last November after losing 65 pounds, exercising regularly, better diet - bad cholesterol in high range. Had it checked again in March, still exercising and ever-improving diet and total weight loss about 80 pounds, bad cholesterol up 20 more points. To be fair, I turned 50 and I have a family history of heart disease - which is why my doctor chose to put me on a statin. Now I'm waiting for results of bloodwork since taking it for 3-4 months - still losing (right around 100 pounds), still exercising, diet getting better. We'll see.
