Spin Bike

Hello, I've been thinking of purchasing a spin bike and recreating my spin class that I take once a week. It isn't feasible for me to get to the gym more than once a week due to the location. I was reading that spinning doesn't always help with weight loss? I'm 5'11 and 169. I'm hoping to get down to 150-155. I'm currently focusing on cleaning up my diet, including daily hikes, and upping my water. Is a spin bike a positive addition?

Do you live in an area where you can ride outside? My tri club does spin classed as a way of maintaining bike fitness over the winter but, IMO, it's akin to running on a treadmill vs running outside.

A good spin bike (like a Lemond Revmaster) will set you back about as much as a decent entry level road bike & trainer. You could ride & enjoy the great outdoors & use the trainer in the winter.

In general exercise, by itself, does little to help with weight loss. It's all about energy balance - consuming fewer calories than you expend. Having said that exercise bestows other benefits and I'd rather be fit and still a little overweight than being sedentary and overweight.

Spin is cardio. Sure it helps with weight loss, as long as you're careful about what you eat.

Riding outside is best ... but riding a spin bike isn't bad either. Just be sure to get a good quality spin bike, not just any old stationary bike. The most common thing you'll find out there are stationary bikes, and they're not brilliant. They're the last resort. But a proper spin bike isn't bad.

Anything that puts you in a calorie deficit will aid with weight loss.

I love Spin and am a certified instructor. I've ridden many Spin Bikes and my favorites are the Water's Tsunami (which I own) and Schwinn. I don't ride my Spin bike a lot in the summer (I like to get out and ride my "real" bike) but it is really nice to have in the Winter months.

I would love to ride outdoors, but it rains 9 months out of the year and we live in pretty rough terrain. I think I'd spend most of the time pushing the bike. I was looking into the Schwinn bike, due to their affordability and positive reviews. In addition to the bike, I was thinking of adding some weights so I can do more exercises in my yard or indoors when the weather is bad. I dislike living over an hour from the nearest gym.

Any exercise in and of itself doesn't default to weight loss...if it did, people who aren't trying to lose weight wouldn't exercise. If you are in a calorie deficit you will lose weight...exercise of any kind can help as it increases you energy expenditure, but if you eat to maintenance you will maintain regardless of the exercise you're doing.
