Weight Loss and PCOS

Hey everyone! My name is Sonia and I'm from NYC. I'm 32 and, as you may have guessed from the title, I have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome, for those who may not know). My struggle with weight loss has been made so much more difficult by PCOS! I managed to lose 90 lbs a few years ago doing weight watchers on my own but I gained a lot, but not all , of it back. After yo yo dieting for a while I figured I would give MFP a shot. My usual workout routine is 5 days a week before work but recently I've been slacking, so I'm slowly getting back into that as well. I'm just here for support, as well as to be supportive of any and everyone who may need it, and especially any female struggling with PCOS. I'm definitely a work in progress, and I'm taking it day by day.

    Hey I'm hayley
I was told last week I have pcod and unless I lose weight fertility specialist won't help! My doctor wants me to lose 7lb in 4 weeks and hopes that's enough to show I'm trying! Thanks for the encouragement that it is possible to lose weight with pcos/pcod

@HayleyA95 hey! PCOS/D is definitely a struggle, but I am sure you can do this!! If you need any support or if you have any questions, I'm here! I was diagnosed when I was 18 so I've been dealing with it for a while now, but with perseverance anything is possible!

Are you being treated for the PCOS? I am in the same boat as you. Being on metformin makes it substantially easier to lose weight. You still have to do the work and eat at a deficit and exercise, but metformin helps with the insulin resistance that made us gain all this weight in the first place.

Hi, I have PCOS too and also looking for support and would be happy to do the same. Metformin didn't help me with getting my period regulated although I was on it for some time. Weight loss definite helped (my fertility doctor also said he wouldn't help me if I didn't lose weight). What helped me most was acupuncture - after not having a period all of 2015 (while on metformin), one session jump started my period. Though they were about 40+ days, it was still something and I stopped the medication. I lost 35lb last summer on strict calorie deficit plan (Dr. Bernstein here in Canada); I did continue acupuncture and got pregnant, but I miscarried in the fall last year and in the months after gained the weight back. Afterwards I just sort of started looking into natural remedies and got my periods on 30 day cycle (which I've never had!) by drinking spearmint tea daily, taking vitamins: Co-Q10, B12, D3, Biotin, fish oil and a multivitamin (I confess, some of these are gummies because too many pills make me gag and cry..!). I definitely think weight loss and managing insulin resistance is important, but other remedies may help you as well as it did for me.

@Deshae34 it is a struggle, but we can overcome it! I'm sure of that! @crimsontech i am currently on metformin (started that is what helped me lose the 90 lbs before, so I totally agree), spironolactone, and birth control, all for the PCOS. Unfortunately, my body has gotten used to the metformin so I'm not experiencing the weight loss jumpstart that I did when I first started it.

@theWODdoll i am always open to hearing about alternate methods and approaches to treatment.! @aka1030 i am more that happy to offer support as well as give as much as I can. I am very familiar with the constant weight loss/gain yoyo and I know how difficult that can be.

Hey ladies wondering if any of you can help me figure out whats happening! I had a private ultrasound because I hadn't had a period in 6 months, cysts were then found on my ovaries! I was told by the lady doing the ultrasound that I need my hormones balancing but when I went to the doctors a few days later my hormones are fine, but was told it's pcod? Is it weight related (I've lost 17lb so far still no ovulation), is it the cysts I'm so confused! Anyone have any ideas?
