Firm mattress.
Here's a philosophical question that stumped me when I did philosophy (ethics) during my bachelor - I know my answer now but it'll be interesting to see what you think is the right thing to do.
Two people grow up in two separate - but equally rough - families. One grows up wanting to help children advoid a similar childhood to what they had. The other grows up with a chip on his/her shoulder and feels the world 'owes' them and ends up getting involved in serious criminal activity.
Person #2 is later arrested and tried for a serious crime.
Should thier personal circumstances (thier upbringing) be taken into account when on trial? If so, why given the other person grew up with other people's interests in mind? And if not why not, given thier childhood obviously shaped who they became as a person?1 -

I think regardless of our upbringing, when we become adults we are alone responsible for how we live our lives and for the decisions we choose to make. However, I do believe that if abuse is a factor in that upbringing, then yes... It should be taken into account.
