Yogurt ?? Can I freeze it??

I love yogurt, but sometimes get bored with the texture. Can yogurt be frozen in the containers it comes in from the Grocery??
Or would it be better to put it into another type of freezer container??
I keep craving ice cream - but I'm thinking frozen yogurt would be a good substitute for a whole lot less calories.
Any comments or advice?
Thanks

I've never actually frozen yogurt before but I think it would make a nice substitute for ice cream! I'm going to freeze some tomorrow and see how it turns out:-)0

Yes all the time. Like ice cream.0

I've frozen the little plastic cups of yogurt and they taste great!
However, once you freeze it, if you decide you want it as regular yogurt, you're out of luck, because whenever I've frozen it and put it back into the fridge again, the texture gets really disgusting..it looks like it has gone bad.0 -

Thank You - makes sense that the consistency would change after being frozen and then thawed.
Thanks everyone for your responses - I think I will try freezing some tomorrow0 -
We have popsicle molds and my kids love it when I make them with yogurt. I usually put a little milk in with the yogurt to thin it out a bit, and add really small pieces of chocolate. (Warning: Chocolate chips get really hard when they're frozen!)0

Ohh, great idea, I think I could really come up with some interesting combinations of fruits & yogurts, etc!! Thanks for the inspiration!0 -
I've wondered about making fruit smoothies with fruit, yogurt, etc and freezing those...?0

I was just thinking about this today myself, thanks for the post.
I wonder if you'd kill the active cultures though, they are an added bonus for health, but at least you'd still have the frozen treat part of it.0 -
I like mixing frozen berries, two tb of peanut butter (or PB2), and sugar free chocolate pudding, then sticking it in the freezer for a while. Tastes like chocolate peanut butter ice cream. I'm sure you can try the same with plain yogurt instead of pudding.0

I've added frozen berries before, that thickens it up nicely.
The PB and pudding combo sounds fantastic, gonna have to try that, thanks.0 -
We freeze it right in the container. It doesn't crack or make a mess, and tastes wonderful!0

I actually read something about this earlier today! Apparently if you freeze yogurt that has live active cultures in it, they just go to sleep while frozen but when you eat it they are reactivated by the warmth of your body. I read it in cooking light magazine, I have no other sources offhand, but logic tells me that it sounds correct (which is why I passed it on!).0 -

Well, I get those GoGurts for my boys and freeze them and they are fine when they defrost...maybe they make it that way. They say to freeze them that way by the time they get them at lunch time, they are defrosted but don't go bad. They also show on the commercials for the kids to just poke a spoon into the lid of the yogurt and then eat it as a yogurtcycle type thing )0 -
It makes a delicious dessert if you mix it with a little bit of cool whip, stir in some fruit (bananas and strawberries work well) and then freeze it for a bit.0
-
Yes, you can freeze it. I tried it yesterday and it turned out great. Just make sure you don't leave it in too long.0

We do this all the time for our kids.. sometimes I stick a hard plastic spoon right into the lid of the yogurt before freezing so that we it's done you have a built in "ice cream" pop stick. The kids thinks it's a great dessert!!!!0

I LOVE all these great ideas - Thanks everyone for all the advice0
