Hi all, just started weight training about a month ago. Is it necessary to do 10 mins of warmup cardio prior to weights? Would love to hear your thoughts. TIA

not necessary, unless you feel you need it. Its important to warm up but that can be done in a variety of ways.0

I warm up by walking to the gym.0

If you enjoy it and it feels good, do it. There is no harm in a 10 minute warm-up. It also adds a 10 minute cardio workout to your workout, so you burn more calories overall because you did it.2

I usually do 10 min of casual rowing, just to get things moving (helps me spy out how busy the free weight area is and whether I should sub in dumbbells or machines), otherwise I follow the warmup routine per lift in my programme.
Cheers, h.
Add: I'm not a purist when it comes to my workout. If I have to switch, rather than hang around waiting, I do.1 -
I don't usually. My regular lifting routine is after work. I walk around a lot at the end of my work day(it's just part of my job), so I feel warmed up by the time I get to the gym.0

I prefer warm ups sets - find that's the best way for me to avoid injury by doing the specific lifting movement with light weights rather than a generalised warmup.
Some people like a cardio warmup and it's mostly just personal preference. It's also something you can vary depending on how you feel - back a little stiff? Maybe a gentle row might ease it off for example.
It really shouldn't compromise your lifting performance. If it does then you are warming up wrong!3 -
Depends on how much muscle you have to warm up. If you're 110 lbs you don't need to warm up much. If you're a 250 lb no fat powerlifter lifting heavy you need to take much more care to warm up your muscle fibers before using them explosively. (Simolenov)
Look at the way elite athletes in your sport warm up. For example heavyweight Olympic bicycle track sprinters, speed skaters & shotputters wear compression tights and warm up about 45 minutes before competing. Lightweight marathon runners? Not so much.0 -
My warm up is walking up and down my house stairs 5-8 times. Then I just to it.0

I'll only hop on a spin bike if I'm feeling exceptionally tight and stiff. Otherwise it's just shoulder warmup for bench days and warm up sets.0
