When none of your clothes fit...

Hi all,
What's your best advice for when your clothes get too big! It's not logical to buy a whole new wardrobe every time I drop a pant size.
Do any of you have any tips outside of just getting new clothes or getting old ones taken in?

find a good tailor and get things tailored as needed (there is only so much you can do without ruining the design of the clothes however) - ie you don't want to try to go from a size 12 to a size 8 by taking in the waistband, it would fit weird
you don't need to buy a new wardrobe every time - but a couple of articles (1 pair pants, 1 skirt, couple of tops) and voila - I went from a size 10 to a size 6 in about 3 months and did that. also didn't buy any huge amount of clothes at a time - but each pay day, I bought a couple of things; go to someplace like TJMaxx or Marshalls or Ross - you can get nice clothes for cheap6 -
You can always try thrift stores or consignment shops. I used to shop in the latter when I was a working single mom and needed to look professional but couldn't afford the prices at regular shops. Thrift stores are my favorite place to buy jeans, because they're inexpensive, already broken in, and if they were going to shrink, they've usually already done so.13

Thrift stores, TJ MAXX and sales at places like JcPenney.
My parents did an amazing thing where they bought me a $100 gift card for Jcpenney and everytime I drop a pant size I go pick up a few pairs off the clearance section, shirts are easy to find on clearance or at thrift stores, and can be pretty cute as well. I am getting quite bored with wearing the same clothes to work though, so that bums me out honestly. But even more motivation to get to goal!11 -
Don't wait til everything is too big. Gradually start buying new stuff and use it to replace your worst fitting items. So you end up with a range of sizes as you lose. When you hit goal weight, then just keep replacing slowly.8

I did the same. And garage sales, clearance racks, etc.2 -
I have a few pair of jeans that are too big in the waist (looser in the legs too, but not too loose to wear) so on days that I wear flowy/casual tops I wear them and use a safety pin to close them instead of the button. It helps make them smaller around the waist and I can wear them without tugging them up all day. I'm currently a size 2/4 and can do that with my size 6 jeans.. any bigger than that and it bunches weird and I just won't bother trying. That's helped me continue to wear jeans for a while longer.8

Clearance racks and thrift stores are my best friend. I grab a few versatile things and make them work. I love stretchy clothes. I buy them when they fit like a glove and they last me a couple months before I shrink out of them. Flowy tops and dresses are also great. Good luck!3

This is great advice. To add to it; I'm lucky in that I used to be a tailor so I've been taking in my clothes myself as I go. A cost effective way to going about this is to divide your good clothes into two groups, get one taken in now and the other set when you lose more weight. That way you'll have one set that fits and one that's close.
Buying some cheap stuff to fill our your wardrobe can supplement this too.5 -
I actually just started selling my clothes to thrift shops like Platos and Crossroads Trading. Either I'd end obtaining store credit for more clothes or I just kept the cash. Platos is pretty trendy and young adult - Crossroads is luxury wear like Chanel, LV, Prada, etc. More adult or Fashion Week.3

Wrap dresses and 25% spandex skinny jeans. They are life (budget) savers for mid fat loss journey clothes. Also, only buy one or two pairs of jeans/trousers at a time, make sure they are slightly snug but not muffin top tight. That way you can shrink into them and they'll still look good even when they are just 1 size too big. Also, really cheap clothes, you know you're not going to fit them for more than a few months so why bother spending a lot of money on them. Sure they wear, tear and fade faster, so what...you won't need them to last that long.4

You could put on a clothing swap. Get all your friends to bring clothes in good condition that they don't want anymore then you all have a rummage and maybe a cuppa and take home your picks for free. Donate whatevers left. :-)5

Hunt down a good flea market! I get everything second hand now, it's cheap and means that you're not dressed exactly like everyone else who shops on the high street1

Dresses, trousers with a good amount of stretch and, um dresses.
All my smart work trousers are now too big and look silly. I really should get at least some of them taken in...
Irritatingly, I'm at a point where one size is obviously too big, but the next size down is still a little small.
I don't want to or need to lose any more weight, so I haven't quite figured out what to do yet!2 -
Secondhand, OP. Oh, and belts.
Also, Ebay. Plenty of people selling stuff that doesnt fit any more on there.Irritatingly, I'm at a point where one size is obviously too big, but the next size down is still a little small.

Try putting your measurements into this site to get an idea of where you should be going. A absolute star has collected the raw numbers in inches/cm from the official sizing guide published by a range of shops, and set up a database that spits out the closest matches to your own measurements.

Each time I go down I go to thrift stores! I get myself a few things! It's way cheaper and I feel so much better in clothes that don't sag3

i have lost 8" from my waist but have 2 or 3 pairs of jogging bottom, so just bought some elastic and re elasticated the waist bands making them fit again, having baggy clothes hides the progress, ready for the ultimate un veiling of the 'new you'3

Do you have a value village where you live? You could get stuff pretty cheap there. In terms of selling, try ebay?0
