Hi everyone! My husband started the keto diet 3 months ago and has already lost over 70lbs! He has TONS of energy and is looking amazing!
I finally started keto this past weekend and I'm doing pretty good. I've looked up recipes online and even found an amazing keto pizza recipe that tastes amazing! I've even altered the recipe to make cheesy bread, and pigs in a blanket
What I want to know is if you've done or are currently on keto, what worked well and what didnt. I'd really love any feedback!
Thanks,
P.s. please feel free to add me! Id love the motivation and support!
P.p.s. here's the keto recipe:
1.5 cups of shredded mozzarella and 2 tablespoons of cream cheese. Place in a bowl and microwave for 1 minute.
Stir and then heat again for 30 seconds.
Add 3/4 cup of almond flour, 1 egg and Italian seasoning (as little or as much as your taste buds can handle).
Take the dough and flatten it on a pan. Use aluminum foil and spray pam to prevent it from sticking.
Poke holes in it to avoid bubbling. Add onion powder and garlic powder (as much as you prefer)
I have a gas oven so I cook it for 5 minutes at 400 degrees.
When it's light brown I add cheese and whatever toppings (pepperoni etc).
Cook for another 4-5 minutes or until cheese is melted.
VOILA! Easy and delicious pizza!

I just started keto 3 days ago and have lost 2.4 pounds already. And if I was just calorie counting i would have stopped losing because of my monthly. My weight does not flucate so much anymore. I am feelling a little off but I am told thats normal till you actual get into ketosis7

Keto for me was a fail.
It made my IBS and PMDD much, much worse, and when I realized that aside from the huge water weight drop in the beginning that I would lose the exact same amount of weight per week while including carbs, I gave it up and never looked back. It did nothing for my hunger.
Keto/low carb causes me to have more frequent anxiety attacks, I couldn't sleep well. I didn't have any energy for lifting, kickboxing or jogging.
I did it for around 6 months.14 -
No advice but I would highly recommend searching the forums for "keto" and checking out the hundreds of threads similar to yours. These threads generate a lot of good input, but also seem to draw in a LOT of anti-keto folks bent on making sure everyone knows keto isn't magical - even when you already know it's not (probably why you already got a "Woo" & why I'll probably get at least one for this comment... ).
Keto is still dependent on CICO for weight loss, but lots of people love it for appetite control & a sense of satiety, as well as many other benefits unrelated to weight loss/control. Best of luck to you & grats to your hubby for his success.23 -
With my first bout of keto, I steadily dropped 20lbs in about 6 months, which is the most weight I've ever successfully lost as an adult. Keto combined with a good calorie deficit worked wonders because keto killed my appetite and I felt full of energy and awesome.
In the end, it ended up being too restrictive for me to stick to forever. I love carbs and I really missed them, regardless of how many keto pizzas and sugar-free desserts I'd make. I regained all the weight when I switched back to carbs.
I've tried restarting keto a few times over the years but I just can't restrict myself like that anymore. I'm now simply counting calories and eating whatever I want. If I want to eat 80% carbs for the day, I will - but I will be damn hungry as a result! So the majority of my days feature a good balance of carbs, protein and fats. I allow myself to enjoy cookies, chocolate bars and all kinds of fast food/junk food as long as it fits into my calorie goal. I think this method is much more sustainable.22 -
I'm 3 weeks into the Keto diet, and have lost 5 lbs. of what I assume is water weight. Lost it in the first week, and haven't lost anything since. Not sure if I'm doing it right! I pretty much stick to just meats, cheese, eggs, and some veggies. It definitely DOES feel good not eating all the processed foods I was always stuffing my face with on a daily basis. I'm sleeping like a baby, which I haven't done in years. I do plan to try & lose about 15-20 more lbs., and stick to this type of 'lifestyle' for a while, and then slowly add other carbs.4

Only thing I can think of is maybe you are eating to much fat? If you are eating to much your body is just burning that fat and not what you have stored.10

With Keto/low carb you still have to count calories. Considering Keto/low carb are fat-heavy on the macros, and fat has 9 calories per gram, why wouldn't you?Only thing I can think of is maybe you are eating to much fat? If you are eating to much your body is just burning that fat and not what you have stored.

Fail. I was keto for 5 months. Felt great in the first month or two, but was really missing the sweets like cake, muffins, pastry, ect. Tried to make keto versions, but didn't like it. I was just not happy with the restrictions. I only lost about 6lbs, but needed to maintain and I knew I couldn't eat this way for much longer. Now I found that I can eat high carb, stay within my maintenance and be quite happy. I do OMAD and IF. This helps me to not over eat.7

Success for me. Lost about 55 lbs in 3 - 4 months and another 20 in another run of 3 months. My two pieces of advice are: 1) find enough low/no carb foods that will keep you satisfied for that period of time (i.e., don't get bored of the same couple things over and over); and 2) don't get caught off-guard with nothing to eat when you are hungry (like if everything you eat is a recipe and needs prep, that's risky. Have some foods that you can just eat (like roll up some turkey and cheese). I found that as long as I was well prepared, it was quite easy and the only trouble came if I was hungry and didn't happen to have things to eat on hand and ready to go. Then, I could talk myself into eating something that was relatively low carb but not really in the ideal range I was working in.
Good luck, well done for your husband, and I don't care if some people frown on keto. I'm happy with the results, my experience is my own, and I didn't ask what you think. :^)7 -

I've been keto for a couple of years. It really agrees with me (improved blood glucose, better stomach and autoimmune issues, better energy, better cognitive function, nicer skin and hair, fewer cravings). I lost about 40lbs on in in well under half a year and have maintained fairly easily on it.
I've tried increasing carbs a few times but my cravings come back hard. I'm actually finding that I do best with almost zero carbs but I keep adding them in because I like to eat them.
My biggest tip is to believe the sodium recommendation of 3000-5000mg per day (2300 mg in a teaspoon of table salt). I did not add salt for a few weeks and I suffered for it. LOL I finally increased sodium when the muscle cramps would not let up.
I would also recommend joining the Low Carber Daily MFP group or the keto group. Great people there. That's where you want to go to hear the success stories.
The down side is not eating sweet things, but doing that was a large reason why I needed to lose weight. I miss sweets a bit but not much. At least not if I don't eat any.

I did keto every time I got ready for a competition. 12-16 weeks. Sure I got shredded (under 10% bodyfat), but it's NOT a lifestyle I could do. I enjoy carbs and many of my family cultural get togethers include foods that are carb laden.
ANY DIET works if applied. It's MAINTAINING it where people fail most of the time.

Lesson learned! I was doing 'keto under 20', but in a stall/plateau. I watched several YouTube videos on stalling; some said 'Eat more carbs!' Or 'Eat more calories!'. Neither appealed to me.
Then one said 'Eat more protein, not so much fat'. I tried that, and it did the trick. I was ignoring that I had never reached my protein macro goal at all, maybe getting half of it. I was all about the fat, often exceeding my fat macro. Such a slight change worked for me.
The formula supposedly is 0.8g protein for each pound of Lean Body Mass. and calculators for that online, but it's typically about 60% of your actual weight. My macro percentage was correct for my weight, but I never got there. I had to work at it (it's still not easy to eat that much when you're not hungry), and let go of force-feeding fat.
After just one day of fulfilling my protein macro, I saw results, and have lost something everyday since. It seems your body becomes accustomed to burning fat. If you exceed your fat macro but don't hit your protein goal, you will only burn the fat you take in. That puts you in a maintenance state, or even weight gain. Now I watch the quality of my protein, too, to get the most out of what I eat.8 -
Hello and welcome! I suggest you check out the main low carber daily forum group here in MFP. It's where most of us ketophiles tend to hang out:

Track your calories. If you aren't losing weight, it's because you are eating too many of them. And fats make it really easy to eat a ton of calories.5 -

Make sure you get enough sodium, and incorporate foods high in potassium/magnesium so you can balance to your electrolytes. If you feel sick, tired or crampy, that is usually the issue. Tracking calories might be needed too if you can't naturally get in a deficit.0 -
Success so far, I'm 30 lb's down so far and have more to go. I failed before because I was just concentrating on the "low-carb" side and not looking at calories, also I struggled and plateaued after 10lb's so reduced calories and moderated protein intake. I thought that protein was good because of training and weights, but soon realised that too much protein was causing me to slow down weightloss1

Failure and success. Did keto for a bit and had good weight loss. Stop because I am a meat and potatoes sort of guy. A bit of the weight came back and felt horrible after eating for a year a regular diet again. Went to doctor and found out I had diabetes but couldn't give up carbs. Well a year later, had heart attack because diabetes shrunk my coronary arteries and found I had a A1C of 10.5. Triple bypass and insulin at age 44 was not how I wanted my life to turn out.
I was bound to get off insulin and carbs had become poison to my body. Told diabetic manager that I would get off insulin to which they doubted highly. Secretly I did too because I loved carbs but I was determined. Within 4 months I was down 20 lbs with 10 lbs to go until goal weight. Insulin was reduced 4 times and finally discontinued. Ketosis has eliminated cravings for carbs and been soda free almost a year now (8/23/16 last soda). My cholesterol number are best in my life. I have found many substitute for foods I used to love like Mozz sticks (http://www.tryketowith.me/2015/09/09/easy-keto-mozzarella-sticks/). Now I eat some protein with a side of veggies. Snacks are usually nuts though every once in a while I get a pint of Halo Top. Still off insulin and maintain weight decently. I have a cheat meal every once in a while but it usually stay in ketosis or get back in next day. If it wasn't for what diabetes has done to my body I probably might have gone back to carbs. Now I have a scar to remind me to stay strong. Test strips also remind me of the benefit when I see my glucose on cheat meal days which keeps them infrequent.
Like anything success or failure depends on your motivations and efforts. Best of luck.3 -

It wasn't the protein. It was the calories that you consumed that slowed down weight loss. And protein is very good for muscle retention while losing weight. But a person generally needs .6 to 1g (more towards the right if leaner) per lb during weight loss.6 -
Its definitely the way to go. I started August 21st and I am down 33 pounds with Keto and I.F. and I am never hungry on this eating style. I love it!3

I've had nothing but success with Keto! I love it!! Feel free to add me0

That's amazing!
I started on June 28th and weighed 280. This morning I weighed 229.
I've had serious health issues my entire life, including autoimmune problems for the last 20+ years. For the first time in I don't know how long I can actually type without my fingers being in agony. The inflammation has gone down quite a bit in my hands and most of my other joints. Now if it would only help with the pain. My migraines have decreased by quite a bit as well. I'm pretty much housebound most of the time otherwise I'm sure my progress would be quite a bit faster.
Definitely need to try that pizza recipe! Sounds delicious!

I started my weight loss journey Keto after I had my second child.
My goal was to lose 25kgs. I went from being a size 8-10 to a 16 whilst pregnant with my first born and I didn’t lose it all before I was pregnant with my second.
I lost 15kgs with Keto and it helped me to learn to stop starving myself, not be afraid of good fats and instead limit my carb/sugar intake.
I stalled for a few months and I realised that Keto is great when you have a lot of weight to lose but you lose sight of counting calories and they add up.
I’ve started using MFP and I’ve lost another 5kgs. Now I don’t stick to any diet I just count my calories & macros and I don’t limit myself from any food groups I account for them.2 -
Keto was a fail for me, but I learned about food choices from it, so I wouldn't exactly call it a fail. I was extremely hungry on it all the time no matter what and how much I ate, and I developed digestive issues after a while. I just didn't feel like myself for the whole time I was on it. Worst of all is that it triggered severe depression for me which is why I chose to stop white knuckling it.
My mental health improved considerably when I stopped and I was back to my usual chipper self in just under 2 weeks, digestive issues took a little bit longer but successfully recovered, and I learned that starches play an important role in my satiety. Going back to simple dieting I was able to lose the weight I gained on keto and knowing what fills me up made it easier to choose what to eat or not to eat when I'm hungry.3 -

I did it for around 6 months.
This may be because carbohydrates contribute to natural serotonin production. So people with anxiety or depression (caused by serotonin deficiency) might want to avoid low-carb diets. I would go nuts without carbs myself. Some people do great on low carb diets, but it's not for everyone!1 -
Been doing keto with IF since coming back on here, gone from 90Kgs (198lbs) to 79Kgs (174lbs). Not going to lie was tough to start with, and there has been blips.0

Not having to count calories on Keto to maintain my 50 pound weight loss from three years ago is one thing that makes sticking with Keto now for a total of four years so easy for me. One may count or not count. I think the key to my not needing to count calories was because my carb binging stopped during the first 90 days of nutritional ketosis. 4 years in I know in my case Keto is a sustainable WOE to improve my health and health markers.6 -
Keto + CICO = Win. Losing sight of your caloric allotment for the day for days, weeks, months will create the distraction from your starting weight you will cry over.1

You aren't reading the context. She isn't losing on keto, so she isn't achieving a deficit naturally like you are. This means she needs to count calories because fat is calorie dense and easy to overeat for some people. Those who can lose weight on any method without counting are able to achieve a deficit without counting, so they're not included in this advice.8
