Hey everyone! I am training for my first 5K race that is happening in late September. Today, I ran the 5K distance straight through without walking for the first time!!! I ran it in 31 minutes. I am not sure how this time fits in with others? Is this a good time for a beginner? What time should I strive for? Thanks!!!

yep. You'll finish somewhere in the middle of most races.0

That's a great time for a beginner! I've never ran an entire 5k, but I've finished several. My fastest time is 40:07 (would have been 38 if my laces hadn't come undone at the start, and I hadn't pulled my hammy mid race)0

31 minutes is great for a beginner. My friend who has been doing them for a couple of years got her personal best at a race in May and was at 26 minutes. That was also my first race which was 38 minutes...I didn't quite train enough, so I had to walk a lot and the hills KILLED me! So...you have until September, I don't know where you live, but expect hills in your race if you are anywhere that's not totally flat. Do some hill training! I did some this morning as I am training for my second race which is the end of September! GOOD LUCK!0

That's a great time starting out! I've done 3 5k's this year and my best time was only 31:28. I have very short legs though. I would just strive to finish, especially your first race. Also a word of advice, your first race will most likely be nerve racking. All the people and the excitement might affect you in a positive or negative way. Start off at a steady pace and don't take off too fast. It might wear you out if you do and you will lose momentum and energy by the end of the race and might finish at a later time than if you just started off more slow. Good luck and awesome job so far!0

That's right at 6mph and a very good time... pretty much middle of the pack. I'm betting you'll be even faster on race day thanks to those wonderful endorphins.0

I think it is a great time for a beginner. I did my first 5K in April, but I did not train at all, and I did it in 40 minutes. In most 5Ks there are many people who are going to be walking. And your run will be better on the race because it is so much easier to run with a whole bunch of people. By the time you will get to the finish line you will ask yourself: Is this really over already? You will be great!!!0

The Couch to 5k plan is AWESOME! The site http://www.c25k.com has all kinds of different info, from podcasts to treadmill versions. It starts you off with running just one minute at a time, then walking, then running, etc, and gradually increases the amount you run each week until you're able to run 30 minutes straight in 9 weeks.0 -

If you want to find out how good your 5K time is, why not try the age related calculator on RunnersWorld. A score of 50% means you took twice as long as a world champion of your age and gender would do over that distance
http://www.runnersworld.com/cda/agegradingcalculator/0,7977,s6-238-277-415-0,00.html
It means you can compare times by different ages and genders on the basis of WAVA rating. So 30 mins for one person might be a WAVA of 50% but for a younger person it might be 45%.0 -
