Hi all,
Can someone explain this please. I just don't understand how I can get an extra 400 or so calories for free.

Thanks for the reply, CyberTone. I had read some of the articles and previous posts regarding this and, in hindsight, perhaps my questions could have been a bit more specific.

What has me confused is the extra exercise calories. I find it difficult to fathom how an estimation of future calories burned can be made from a one off update from MapMyFitness. Is it possible to turn this function off? I'm concerned about ending up eating more than I should.

It helps to be more specific and provide some details about your settings, stats, and exactly what type of activity and how long you performed that activity, before someone can provide more than just general information beyond what is included in those articles I posted.

How many minutes did you exercise to earn a 400 Calorie adjustment and what did you do - a run, a walk, a bike ride? Was this adjustment at the beginning, middle, or end of day? The adjustments can change throughout the day as the programs sync. What is your current weight? If you are obese, a 400 Calorie adjustment for a 60 minute walk might be a good estimate based on your gender, height, weight and speed. What is your MFP Activity Level setting? If the MFP Activity Level setting is Sedentary, and you accumulated 10,000 steps, that 400 Calorie adjustment might be correct. If you are set to Active or Very Active and only took 5000 steps, that 400 Calorie adjustment might not be correct. What is your MFP weekly loss rate set at?

The more information you provide, the more likely you will get a more relevant explanation.

What CyberTone said. You're not giving nearly enough information for anyone to say anything about what caused the exercise calorie increase.

I mean, case in point. I ran five miles yesterday after work, earning me 419 calories. Should I be like you and just assume that they came out of nowhere (my calves and those hills would beg to disagree!) or is it better to accept that well, if you do exercise or you're active, sometimes you burn more calories.

The fact that you used MapMyFitness tells me that maybe you were active. What did you think would happen?
