10,000 steps

Heya,
I was wondering whether someone is losing weight just by doing the 10,000 steps a day challenge. Will this help toning up as well? I am pretty much sure I do not take this many steps a day usually, but bought myself a pedometer and willing to start on this. Anyone else doing the 10,000 a day challenge? Sorry if I call this a challenge and it's not for some of you. Hehe

You lose weight by being in a calorie deficit. 10,000 steps is just a number chosen to make sure you're moving. I'm one of those people where getting 10,000 steps isn't a challenge (I work retail), but I still have to log my food to make sure I'm not overeating.2

10,000 steps is a way to get inactive people more active. It's not for "toning".....which is a made up word for losing the layer of fat covering lean muscle mass.....and maintaining that lean muscle mass you already have while you lose weight.
To lose weight and keep (more) lean muscle, you need to eat at a moderate deficit, get adequate protein, and do some sort of resistance training. You can start with body weight exercises if you don't have weights.
The reason why 10,000 steps won't result in weight loss for most people is unless you are actively watching your calorie intake, you could be eating more calories without noticing. You can cut calories from food intake far more efficiently than burning calories by taking steps.2 -

Nope - diet is the main driver of weight loss. Walking is more for the fitness/cardiovascular benefits. It won't help a ton with muscle development (relative to other exercises at least).1
