Pregnant and working out

Good morning MFP.

I am 11w pregnant (I have two losses in my history with no living children) and my doctor has put me on some restrictions, obviously.

1- HR not to exceed 120, but a spike to 140 briefly is ok
2- no heavy lifting (obviously)
3- low impact cardio (already doing walking, the bike until it's physically not able to happen, those types of things)
4- no jumping (like box jumps but I've already modified to step ups)
5- no core at all (he's worried about pressure on baby and my uncomfortableness)
6- no bench press or other laying down on my back (baby can sit weird on a vein and cause some issues and it's just uncomfy)

That being said, he still would like me to workout. I'm definitely going to do prenatal yoga and walking/elliptical/biking. I have a Polar FT1 HRM, so that restriction is easily modified.

Do any of you have suggestions for other workouts that would keep me going with my success so far but also still follow doctor orders? Thanks in advance!!!

Andrea Orbeck has a great pregnancy workout DVD. Her workouts are challenging but definitely adapted for expectant mothers (like what you describe above).

Sorry forgot to add: congrats! Sorry to hear about your previous lossless but it's so exciting that things are going well for you and your little nugget now! x

As someone who has experienced losses too, I would strongly encourage you to take it easy. Not because you will harm the baby, but because it will be always something on the back of your mind, so definitely not worth the stress!
What I would do would be exercise that does not get the heart rate up, does not put pressure on joints and does not involve anything high impact:
swimming, water aerobics, prenatal yoga (or prenatal pilates if you can find a dedicated class, not worth the risk otherwise as traditional pilates has lots of core exercises) and obviously walking

Swimming! It takes pressure of joints, the water feels very relaxing, can be adapted to very low impact and also is a good cardio workout. I wish you the best :)

Thank you! To be honest I forgot about swimming haha. I have an indoor pool at the gym I go to, so that could be an easy transition :)

    Won't the baby drown?

    I kid, I kid.

Congrats! I loved this prenatal Pilates video when I was pregnant:-)

I would keep going with the walking as long as you can. Even if you end up doing a couple of 10min workouts (that's what happened to me towards the end).

It's been a few years but I did step aerobics.....lots of squats and modified push-ups and such. I had an inline bench that I used to do bench press. That way I wasn't flat in my back.

I loved my pregnancy workout videos which had everything from walking, yoga, some strength training. That and walking every day. With both pregnancies I never had the discomforts that so many of my patients have (OB RN here). I loved being pregnant! Also all this activity allowed me to keep my depression in check as my husband was deployed during my first pregnancy. I probably would have just slept for months without it.
    Congratulations on your pregnancy!!
