Not sure if this should be posted in Chit Chat or if another area of MFP would be more appropriate but I'm thinking of calling my new pet dog Edward but I know all my friends will want to call him Ed. Should I let this happen or correct them and say that my preference would be to call him Edward?

The whole shortening of names is a syndrome in the English language - one that should be addressed.

Michael - Mike
Andrew - Andy
Richard - Dick
Henry - Hank

What about William - Bill? That one always puzzled me but not enough to make me Google the reasoning behind it.

    What?

It's probably the whole shortening aspect of the thread that they're confused about.
Some nicknames & "shortened" name versions are longer than the original.
Nancy is short for Ann, Johnny or Johnnie is short for John, Polly is short for Mary...

There are many theories on why Bill became a nickname for William; the most obvious is that it was part of the Middle Ages trend of letter swapping. Much how Dick is a rhyming nickname for Rick, the same is true of Bill and Will. Because hard consonants are easier to pronounce than soft ones, some believe Will morphed into Bill for phonetic reasons. Interestingly, when William III ruled over in England in the late 17th century, his subjects mockingly referred to him as “King Billy.”

Alfred was really Bruce's father, he just didn't want to tell him because he was disappointed in his son for going around dressed in a costume beating up insane people.

    What about Henry/Hank?

Hendrick is the Dutch form of the name Henry. Henk is the diminutive form of Hendrick and thus Hank from Henk...

My youngest is a Henry...I call him Hank a lot of the time...but I'm the only one...mostly because he's always been big for his age unlike his older brother who is kinda little...they're 2.5 years apart and my youngest is the same size as my oldest...so I always called him "Hank the Tank"

The name Jesus is prevalent in my family but everyone of us goes by Jesse...

In fact I didn't even know my name was actually Jesus until I turned 15 and needed a copy of my birth certificate for a work permit...

My mother didn't even know lol... I remember asking her, if she knew my name was Jesus to which she replied "What the hell did your father do" haha... Mexicans
