Fighting a losing battle...

Hi everyone,

So, in 4 weeks time I am going on holiday, where, like everybody else, I want to feel in good shape and not worry about indulging in the all inclusive goodness!

I am currently at the largest that I've ever been and growing...

Luckily, I'm not one of those people who finds it hard to motivate myself to work out. I love exercise! I'm doing more at the minute than I ever have. For example, tonight I am going to Body Pump followed by Body Balance, tomorrow I am doing a 20 mile bike ride after work and on Wednesday I am doing Body Attack follwed by Spinning etc. etc...

However, due to a number of things going on in my life, back in May I was diagnosed as having a compulsive eating disorder. And this is where I'm really struggling.

With the amount of exercise I am doing, I should have a body to die for, but I just can't stop eating! I forgot the last time i ever felt hungry because I just have to see food and I eat it. To the point where I'm making myself quite ill!

Does anybody have any advice on how I can improve my willpower or stave off the obsessive cravings? Is there anything I can take or any particular foods/drinks I should be having?

Any advice would be so greatly appreciated...

Thanks

Sadie

If you have been diagnosed with an eating disorder, I would consider seeking professional help. There are groups similar to AA for over eaters and compulsive eaters, I would google it and see what you find.
There are also a bunch of good books out there about the topic if you are one of those people who can read and apply on your own. I recommend Meal by Meal to start with.

Good luck - I have similar struggles adn I know that nutrition is the majority of what will help you lose weight.

Well done for taking the first step to sorting this out. The decision and determination to do it is half the battle. I agree professional help would be a good idea. And be gentle on yourself, take it a day at a time, and remember one bad day in itself doesn't matter so much as long as you write it off and move on - don't dwell on it. Plan meals in advance, carry healthy snacks with you, if you are eating out try to visualise yourself making a healthy choice before you go and you are more likely to do it (I read that in a magazine and I guess it sounds silly but it works for me - most of the time!) Before you eat, think whether you are hungry - if not, wait a while. Then you will discover that food tastes twice as good when you are hungry! But don't get too hungry or you will overeat - find the balance that works for you. Good luck and feel free to add me as a friend if you want to.
  • Eat. Not a lot, but a little amount, often if you are exercising! Don't feel bad or let some diagnosis make you feel bad for being hungry (if it's actual hunger)!!!!
You have to fuel the fire! Eat...exercise....eat....exercise. Just eat good things then I, personally, see it as a good thing! Use this site/app to monitor what you eat and what you exercise and you'll see whatever problems are present.

Find out what calorie intake is needed to maintain your weight . Be under that via a combination of cutting back on food or certain foods and exercise. The more you exercise the more often you'll feel hungry.

The answer isnt to "take something" and as far as what to eat:

I've not got an eating disorder but I do struggle with cravings caused by the medication I am on and it has taken me weeks to break the cycle where one snack would lead to a binge. I do two main things. Firstly I eat 3/4 meals a day (sometimes I have 2 breakfasts!) I make sure my meals are all good quality healthy foods. The second is that for a while I removed all snack food from the house (to be honest I ate it all then refused to buy more having reached a point where I was disgusted with my behaviour!). That way if I wanted to snack I had to eat fruit or veggies or good protein such as houmous or grilled chicken. I also worked out I eat more in front of the TV so I have tried to stop watching so much TV!! The trick is not to try and reduce the amount of food you are eating just swap out the high calorie low nutrition foods (chocolate, cakes, crisps etc) for low calorie high nutrition foods. I probably eat more now than I did a couple of weeks ago but I am usually well inside my goal instead of 1500 calories over it!!

First of all i find most per say psych evals nothing more then somebody's opinion. We all have some sort of compusiveness in our lives or we wouldn't be alive. Here is the deal. You can think of an excuse as to why you can't do something or JUST DO IT. I'm at my ideal weight so why do i want to lose another 10-15? It's personal choice and that's the only reason to even consider it. I look good at my current weight. I've not given a single food up at all and have lost around 50 lbs and some change since the start. They say you cant drink beer and lose weight. Even that is an untrue myth.

I drink a substantial amount of beer one day a week and that didn't hamper my weight loss at all. The only exercise i get is from my work and riding a motorcycle, gardening and yard work. I don't run, jog or do aerobics. When i'm home i ALOT of time on my PC sitting. What i do , do is respect food and acknowlege i have to watch how i eat and not what i eat. Yeah you can lose weight eating bad food too which i honestly avoid. I try to maintain a calorie goal the best i can where most days i'm under the suggested goal by MFP and i eat plenty.

So the choice is yours. You can be fit and healthy or continue to not respect your body and be just another FAT person in this world. I chose to not be one. I'm a direct and to the point person so excuse me for being so blunt and to the point. We can seek all the support from others we desire but ultimately CHANGE only comes when WE ourselves decide it's what we really want. Anything other then that is simply time wasted whining and making excuses. Best of Luck!
