Waffle/Pancake Toppers

I'd like to get away from artificial sweeteners and go with something more natural to go on top of my protein waffles. Any suggestions other than plain whole fruit? Is there a way to turn the fruit into something more resembling syrup without all the added sugar? Thank you in advance!

We like to use frozen fruit and simmer to cook it down in a pan (with vanilla extract or nothing at all). Usually strawberries, peaches, or blueberries work pretty well for this.1

Thank you! I'll have to try that.2

Just a note on calories in home made fruit syrup... you'd need to log the weight of the original fresh fruit.
So if 100g of, say, peaches simmer down to one serving of syrup then you'd need to log the 100g of fresh peaches since all that's been taken out is the zero calorie water!
(This is basically why dried fruit makes me cry... Assuming no added sugar or anything, one dried apricot is exactly the same calories as one fresh apricot but SO MUCH SMALLER! )
Personally, I'd go for unsweetened cream (the aerosol kind if you can find it unsweetened, or can fit the slightly sweetened kind in) - it's massively decadent and there's nothing wrong with a little dairy hit! You wouldn't need much...
Or greek yogurt and a tiny bit of honey or agave nectar is good too.2 -
cs2thecox, good point! It always makes me a little sad when I have a small but yummy amount of blueberries "cooked down" to put on my crepe or waffle and have to log 0.25 of a large bag of frozen fruit. hehe1

I hate maple syrup, always have. I usually just eat them with some butter.
But if I'm feeling crazy I love sliced banana with any nut butter.
Or cooked apples with cinnamon/allspice/nutmeg, no added sugar necessary1 -
We just use real maple syrup. No "added" sugar at all!3

I'm not much of a sweets person, so I usually put plain yogurt on pancakes and waffles. If I'm feeling fancy I'll add some berries or my mother's homemade (no sugar) apple cider jelly.1

Waffles are impossible for me to eat without syrup. No fun. Might as well have cereal.1

My favorite treat at this amazing breakfast place is french toast dusted with powdered sugar. I spread a little bit of butter and dip each bite in a little bit of real maple syrup. Overall, I use less than a tablespoon of butter and less than the little cup of maple syrup they give you.
I guess I'm saying using a little bit of butter and syrup may be few calories than you think?1 -
I know this is probably off the table for most people but I have found Cary's sugar free syrup to be delicious on pancakes, waffles, and even in some recipes that call for "maple syrup". I know it's probably just a chemical nightmare but it's tasty and low cal.0

This also works with fresh fruit. If needed, add a little water.1
