Brandon Flowers vs. my heart rate monitor

Hello everyone,
Here is a slightly awkward question regarding my Fitbit charge heart rate monitor.
I went to a Killers gig last night, and because I knew I'd be dancing my bum off I did set my Fitbit to "Work Out" during the show, as that's kind of exercise, right?
After the gig I stopped my "Work Out" mode and it said I had burned about 800 calories during the 1h20 show. Check. I did notice though that my heart rate jumped from about 98 to 137 when Brandon Flowers entered the stage. I'm not even joking, and goodness did that jacket suit him!
So here is my question: Does the elevated heart rate of about 30 - 35 beats per minute, risen mostly by seeing a beautiful man in perfectly skinny jeans and a fringy suit jacket actually burn calories or not? Did I really burn 800 calories during 1,5 hours (I did do a good deal of dancing, shouting, clapping, Mr. Brightsiding and sweating) or maybe less than that?
The question comes after me reading the other day that a new study found that a hot both can burn as many calories as a 15 minute run (as your heart starts beating faster from the heat), which I am not really sure of and would guess that only movement based heart rate speed would burn calories?
Thanks a lot,
Nadine

It's possible that you burned 800 calories in an hour dancing but it depends on your weight and how 'intense' the dancing was. That said, note that 800 calories/hour is pretty tough - that's the equivalent of running about 7 miles for most people.
I'd probably equate it to an hour of moderate intensity cardio...maybe 400-500 calories or so if you were constantly moving.0 -
It does sound high. No doubt you burned something but I think 800 is really pushing it. Not every song is a jump about like a loon number and even if it was it would still be hard to hit 800 calories burned for it. I'd go with half, max.0

Thanks guys. I'd think half as well. It was about 1,5 hours long, but most of the high heart rate must have been due to excitement rather than actual movement, and I guess that's just not the same0

Yup: Heart rate is a proxy for exercise calorie burn, not a direct measure of it. Many other things (besides exercise) raise heart rate without burning commensurate calories. These include excitement, hot weather, hydration problems, physical strain, and more. I think you should assume a smaller burn than what recorded.0

I recall sitting on a plane and having my watch tell me I'd hit my intensity minutes goal for the week. Apparently I didn't want to be on the plane.
So HR may not mean anything but anxiety, or arousal (i have no idea who Brandon Flowers is). Go with half.3 -
Haha, thanks guys! I could easily manage my daily goal in 3 minutes while sitting on the plane. Hate them! And imagine what sitting on a plane with Brandon Flowers would do! (Just kidding). Have a great week everyone!1

I have had my phone tell me that I climbed two flights of stairs in a day when all I did was walk around my one story house and around my very flat mall. (I am physically unable to climb stairs easily, I'm very slow and it's uncomfortable. I avoid them like the plague.)
Computers can know so much. I'd play it safe by adding a couple hundred calories for the concert. If you burned more than that and don't eat it back you'll see it on the scale!
And I'm soooooooooo jealous of you seeing the Killers. I love them. a Dustland Fairytale is my all-time favorite song. I can listen to it on repeat for hours.0
