You burn a certain number of calories a day. This is your TDEE (explained in another thread). You eat a certain number of calories a day. If the number of calories you eat is less than your TDEE then you're eating at a deficit and should lose weight over time. The difference between your TDEE and the number of calories you eat is your deficit.0 -

Your body burns calories 24/7. Active people burn more than inactive people. Your total calories are called total daily energy expenditure (TDEE).
The deficit is taking in fewer calories than you use in a day. Larger deficits are (more) okay for people with lots of weight to lose. Smaller deficits are better when you are closer to goal. This helps you retain more lean muscle mass.0 -
