Well, at 45, I AM old enough to be your mother... Still something of a newb to fitness, but we can support each other.

Can you work out at home? What equipment do you currently have? And how convenient is it for you to get more if you need to? (I'm not talking about machines. I mean stuff like dumbbells, resistance tubes and bands, mats, etc.)

(At present, my goal is getting down to a healthy BMI. I do strength and resistance training with light weights and bodyweight exercises in my basement.)

I can work out at home. It's easy for me to get equipment, I've just never really used any. I have some weights and a mat but that's about it. Add me if you want? I don't know how this stuff works lol

There are a lot of good books on the market. I'm using Strength Training Exercises for Women by Joan Pagano. It's great for people who aren't looking to lift heavy at the moment. (Her exercises don't exceed 12lb weights for dumbbells). I'm pretty sure that when I'm ready, I can exceed, though I do plan to meet with a personal trainer before I do.

Check out YouTube for exercise videos, too.

The equipment I'm currently using includes:

Dumbbells ranging from 3lbs to 12lbs
    Mat
    Stability ball
    Cardio step
Adjustable ankle weight (comes with 20 1-lb weights; I'm only up to 6, right now.)
And the warmups require a 7" ball (I'm using a Nerf soccer ball; it's a bit bigger, but it gets the job done) and resistance band.

Another option would be resistance tubes and bands. I was using them but I've switched to dumbbells and loaned my tubes and bands to a friend. I'll probably buy more before traveling. I usually take the the train and there's a maximum weight allowance for baggage of 40 lbs when buying the cheap tickets. The tubes weigh maybe 1lb altogether. The dumbbells? More.

I'm a big fan of some of the Beach Body programs. Right now, I'm using Chalean Extreme to build muscle. I use her 30 to 40 minute videos and some weights, and I can definitely tell that I'm stronger. :) Have you checked out the Body Building forum here? There are some fantastic, knowledgeable folks there who can probably help get you pointed in the right direction: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/categories/goal-gaining-weight

OP, you can also start out with body weight strength training if you want! Google You Are Your Own Gym, Nerd Fitness, or Convict Conditioning.

I'll also second Chalean Extreme - one of my fave programs!

Check out the Bodybuilding and Weight Gain forum here too, it's a great place to slowly build up your knowledge as new threads pop up.

If you haven't yet, start logging to make sure you are getting enough calories and protein. Good luck!
