Controlling Portion Size

How does everyone manage their portion size for meals?
I find remembering that my stomach is only as big as my fist is an easy way to do it. I just have to imagine my food squished up and if it'd comfortably fit in my stomach or not. After a while, it got to the point where if I ate more than that I would start to feel uncomfortably full.

Digital kitchen scale. It's a must.7

I just eat until I'm full within my calorie limit for the day. If you're feeling hungry but within +-50 calories of your goal, look at changing what you are eating, not how much you are eating. Some people have more satiety with protein, fat, fiber. But some people also feel better with more carbs. Up to you. Experiment.5

I've learned approximately how much food equals a satisfying meal for me, and that's what I put on my plate. For example, for dinner, it's about 100 grams each of meat, starch, and veggie, plus butter.
Also, if I am eating at a restaurant I plan to bring half the entree home.3 -
Yep, the food scale for the win.1

Portion size for meal would depend on what meal, what kinds of foods (calorie density), how many different foods in that particular meal, total calorie need per day, and how many meals per day.
Weighing and logging just seems so much easier and more effective than this kind of heuristic.
My stomach is elastic and can handle way more than a fistfull of food
All that said, I don't log religiously anymore, and religiously logging has given me an idea of proper meal sizes and compositions.
That said, all that goes out of the window if the occasion is special enough5 -
I use a food scale and measure out how many grams I want for my portion. My portion is usually different from the suggested serving size. I eat what I want and/or what works for my eating plan for that day.
My portion for Hershey's Kisses tends to be 1/9th or 2/9ths of a serving. My portion for steam-in-bag veggies is whatever's in the bag which is usually about 3 servings.
A food scale lets me make the decisions about how much I want rather than trying to remember rules-of-thumb for recommended serving sizes.9 -
I want Hershey Kisses now1

I just measure my food3

Food scale and learning from my log. I started out eating the portion listed on the package and as I studied the days I was hungry, the days I did well, and the days I sprinted past my goal like a crazy person, I tweaked from there5

There are so many ways to do this. What you found is a great way to do it. For some it's a food scale, for some it's a dessert plate, for some it's the fist or palm size, and measuring cups and measuring spoons, and reading the labels to find what a true serving size is and the energy value. All this can teach us sustainability and good habits for life. You are doing it! Great job!1 -
Since I cook for just one, me, it's easy. Cooking for a bigger family is a skill set I haven't cultivated. I can easily cook too much, but just enough for several people eludes me.0
