I started this about a week ago as a possible solution to digestive woes. So far, so good on that front, but I'd love to get ideas from people who have been doing it for longer!

I have been doing it for about a year now, and I have found that garlic and onion are my biggest enemies which SUCKS!!! I still crave them sometimes. Definitely stay away from packaged goods (which is sound advice in general, but even the "healthy" things have hidden garlic and onion powders in them. You can cook with garlic infused oil, though to get a hint of that flavor. Truly trust your gut. You will be able to tell what foods irritate your tummy.

I have started a spreadsheet to try to keep track of what I can't handle. Otherwise I'll forget. So far the garlic and onion are hard to avoid, but what really gets me is bread! I'm so used to packing a sandwich for lunch and can't think of what else would be as convenient.

I've done it in the past. The most helpful advice I got was actually from a chef: think in terms of ingredients, not recipes.

or basically, I started looking at the food I was eating and thinking about what flavor, or property (thickening, thinning, bulk, liquid), or color I wanted for a dish, and then looking over what foods I could eat to figure out how to get it.

It helped me get tastier foods than when I just was trying to avoid so many of them and find a recipe that 'matched,' which usually meant just leaving out a lot of the good tasting stuff, you know?

I also looked at a lot of ethnic markets to find foods I was unfamiliar with that might have good flavors or colors and that I could have. :-)

I do and I agree that onions are the worst :( Actually those and artificial sweeteners. You need to be really diligent and write out EVERYTHING you eat and any symptoms you have to pinpoint culprit foods.

I met with my dietitian yesterday and that's what she wants me to try. I'm not looking forward to it. It does not look easy to follow. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that onions and garlic are not issues for me!
