Cholesterol numbers over time

Are cholesterol numbers (total, HDL, LDL and the others) as volatile as weight? Do they fluctuate depending on current events in the body? I've been looking at some older bloodwork reports of mine and wondering how likely a straight-line improvement actually is.

Mine goes up and down each year (sometimes by a lot), even though my diet and exercise routine is very consistent. If you are female, there are some theories that suggest hormone levels can affect your cholesterol, so it depends on when exactly the blood is drawn. But, sometimes I think it's just a random number generator.1

This flyer has some decent information about factors that influence your lipoprotein levels and what variance is normal...

My cholesterol test results were always consistently high until this year.
After a year of weight/fat loss and exercise all of my test results dropped into the "acceptable" and even "ideal" levels.0
