Is it true that squats build muscle throughout your entire body?0

Squats are essentially a full-body exercise, with focus on the quads, glutes, and core. Squats are one of the most efficient exercises you can do! However, you will not build muscle on a caloric deficit. Still, strength training is effective and recommended.2

Squats are a multi muscle exercise - meaning you work more than one muscle while doing them correctly. Weighted or not.
 You are working :
 Inner Thigh
 Outer Thigh
 Booty
 Lower Tummy
 Lower Back
And there are some many variations of squats, you should never get bored

Squats are a compound movement meaning they require multiple muscles and groups of muscles to be engaged to do them. They primarily target the legs and glutes, but different muscles are required to stabilize a barbell across your shoulders...proper form requires engaging the core so you don't injure your back, etc.
Any good lifting program is going to have compound movements like squats, bench press, deadlift, and cleans or rows at the core...isolation and assistance movements are secondary.1

All the shares above are correct. The squat is a great all around muscle development exercise. One thing to bare in mind is the difference between free weight squats and those performed in a smith machine. If you wish to reap the full benefits of the different types of squats and you are healthy enough and strong enough to do so free weight squats (front, narrow stance, wide stance, sumo). Squat away!1
