Caffeine & Creatine

I know that caffeine tends to expel free water from the water... and Creatine is used to restore glycogen to the muscle and often causes water retention... is it counterproductive to take both at the same time? (Not sure if this is a stupid question!)

Creatine doesn't restore glycogen to the muscle, it stores phosphates within the muscle. During the storage the molecules are bound to water. If you aren't drinking much water or if you are taking massive amounts of caffeine you could end up with kidney issues or cramps. You're not going to flush the creatine or the phosphates from the muscles by taking creatine with caffeine.2
