Emergency session

Hi everyone! I am a 31y/o f. I have kids and since my last, 8 years ago, have struggled with my weight. To add to the struggle, my career entails high stress, life-or-death emergencies that I help handle from a console(emergency dispatcher). I work odd shifts, long hours, and crave caffeine!
I finally decided enough is enough. A friend introduced me to ginger tea and Tabata. I’m in the process of incorporating these into my day to day routine.
I was hoping to get some feedback from anyone who is uses either the tea, Tabata, or both. Pros, cons, likes, dislikes...all are appreciated!

Well, Tabata was created by Professor Izumi Tabata for Olympic speed skaters and is in no way applicable or doable by the general population. Most people doing "Tabata" are doing some variety of HIIT or 20/10 intervals. Do you enjoy it? Are you sure you want to combine that with a stressful job? Wouldn't you rather do exercise that you actively enjoy that helps you de-stress?

I like the taste of ginger tea. It gives me a soothing drink without a lot of calories even if I add a bit of honey.

There are no pros or cons to the tea. If you like it drink it. It will not cause weight loss, it will not speed up weight loss, it might help reduce bloating.

Tabata is a good workout and worth it if you enjoy it. It burns calories like all exercise does.

Overall, weight loss comes from your calorie intake compared to the amount of calories your body needs to keep you alive. Focus on being accurate with your calorie counting (a food scale is very helpful). Fill your calories with things like lean meats and vegetables. No food is off limits, so if you want some ice cream or candy just fit it into your calories.

You should try insanity max 30 program by beachbody. It really does help lose fat, it includes a few tabata workouts as well

I love tabata. I do tabata using a stationary bike, which was how the tabata protocol was developed. It has a lowering effect on my blood sugar for about twenty four hours after doing it, which is why I started doing it. For some diabetics it temporarily raises blood sugar, because of stress, but I don't have that problem.

If you do classic tabata, that is to say two minutes of warm up, and twenty seconds of maximal effort interspersed with ten seconds of lesser effort for four minutes, followed by two minutes of cool down, it just wipes the floor with you. If you're not starting from a foundation of being in condition it might not be a good idea. But you can do intervals to improve your conditioning. The upside to tabata is that it takes only a short time. The downside is that you never imagined eight minutes could seem so long. Often I skip tabata in favor of a longer workout because tabata really takes it out of you.

I like ginger tea too, but it's not magical, it just tastes and smells good.

Meghanebk- I meant no disrespect. The program I am using calls the workout Tabata. It could possibly be considered HIIT. And, yes, I do enjoy it! I find that working out harder relieves my stress. Thank you for your input!! I will definitely research Professor Tabata!

USMCMP-First of all, I would like to thank you for your service! Where I live, they find a way to incorporate salt into EVERYTHING. So, the help to reduce bloating is definitely needed. Thank you for the tip about calorie counting. I will look into getting a food scale.

Rheddmobile-I am doing the warmup, and 4 minutes as you described. I am not completely out of shape. But, for the longest I would try to skate by with the bare minimum(a few pushups, dynamic stretching, yoga from time to time). My schedule is so chaotic that getting a longer workout in, though not impossible, seems unlikely. The timeframe for the workout fits. Thank you!!!

I'm sorry if I came off snarky! The perils of posting when tired, that wasn't my intention. I'm glad you've found an exercise system that helps with your stress.

You didn’t come off as snarky, truly. :) I do value the input.
