To get rid of big clothes or not ?

I have saved most of my clothes that no longer fit. I have an array of sizes this time around and I'm still on my journey of weight loss. Have you saved your clothes? Why or why not ? If you didn't, did you regret it?

When I dropped two sizes, I got rid of the top size.14

I held to my clothes for a short while but when they were too big I started donating them to charity. I found it helped me convince myself there is no way back to these clothes! I had a few pricey clothing pieces (cashmere shirts, 3-pieces suits) I kept for over a year but being 103# down, my pant size went from 42 to 32 and shirts from XXL to Medium and coat for 52 to 34 there is no way I could ever put these back! I kept one pair of jeans for now and one suit for a picture soon as before and after.
While loosing weight, I get most of my clothes from 2nd hand stores anyway so they are cheap ;-) I do not regret tossing any clothes, actually this is kind of fun and Actually enjoy clothe shopping, now that most clothes fit well!16 -
I am not at the point of getting rid of clothes yet but I am not looking forward to it.
A few years ago I decided that even tho I am plus size I shouldn't dress like crap anymore (I famously didn't buy clothes because I was always going to "lose the weight"). So I dropped a pretty penny on a work wardrobe. I have the most beautiful dresses I paid so much for.... I am going to be sad when the time comes but I will certainly be getting rid of them!
I might keep one as a reminder....3 -
There's always the tailor for quality clothes you want to keep.
I did what kshama did, though. I got rid of them.4 -
I still, 8 years later, have 4 pairs of jeans. I will not wear them again, but I just can't get rid of them.
My skirts and dresses I altered or passed along, t- shirts, sweaters, and tops, got sent to Goodwill.
It took a year of maintenance before I got rid of anything.
Cheers, h.4 -
I generally hold onto my clothes. I wear them if I can, even if they are too big, but I know how often I've yoyoed in the past and I can't afford a new wardrobe. Several years ago I got rid of all my old thin me clothes, because I figured I would never again be that thin. The act of donating them triggered something though, and I got serious about losing weight. When I was down 35 pounds i was really wishing I had held onto those skinny jeans.4

I keep the size that fits now and the size that most recently fit. Sizes further away than that are donated to Goodwill.4

I kept the biggest pair of jeans I wore as a reminder for several years. The rest I gave away as soon as they were ridiculously big. I had a two year spell where I put on 20lbs but have lost those plus 16 more a year and a half ago. (grand total: 84lbs) I hung onto to those for about a year but then my sister has WLS and I passed them down to her. I do keep one size up for vacations when excess sodium blows me up like a balloon.1

In the beginning after my weight loss I kept my clothes. I've been maintaining my weight for approximately one year and about six months ago I started to go through my closet and do a purge of everything that doesn't fit. I'm donating it all to charity.
I think if you're not at the point where you're purging your closet you still in the back of your mind don't believe it's going to last. This is something we all go through but there comes a point when you realize it's the new me and I'm never going back.5 -
I'm on the horns of this dilemma right now.
I've gone from 15 pairs of pants I felt comfortable in to 3 pairs in the past two months.
That's at least $2k worth of pants that have become worthless in fairly short order.
If the MC Hammer look makes a comeback, I'm golden. Otherwise, it's time find a tailor.

Ditch them! I've sold a lot of nice dresses on eBay and used the money to buy new clothes, mostly in sales, eBay and supermarkets with the occasional more pricey item. There comes a point when you just can't wear clothes that are two or three sizes too big and I WIll NOT be needing them again,! Having clothes that fit me well has made me feel great and spurs me on to stick to my diet.6

Thank you all for replying. A lot of great advice was given!0

I usually try to have a few items that fit correctly. If things are too big and I wear them I'm not motivated anymore to lose more weight. But I still have old favorite skinny items I couldn't get rid of. I just purged and got rid of everything that doesn't look good anymore. Some clothes can look good when they aren't the correct sizes but if they don't then why bother keeping them if wearing them makes you miserable?
It's just too much space to keep them2 -
As a yo-yo dieting person I am oscillating within 38-42 pants sizes for the last decade. Few times I gave my clothes that became too big, and after some time I needed them again.
I will keep all pants at least for 1-2 years after loosing and successful maintaining of my weight.2 -
I kept them until I felt sure I wouldn't be revisiting my top weight again. I held on to some things that were tight fitting at the top weight because now they fit comfortably and I use them for lounge wear, yoga and sleep wear.
You'll know when you're ready, imo!2 -
I always keep 1 above where I am, and 1 below if that's available. I tend to range between a 10 & a 6 depending on lifestyle. In 2011 I started at a 14/16 and I have long rid myself of those clothes.2

I lost 30 lbs, which for me was several clothing sizes. Some shirts and dresses I can still wear, depending on the style. I keep what I can still wear, but I did get rid of some things that were just too big and didn't look right on me. Especially pants that were hanging on my frame or falling off. I think it's personal preference, but I just didn't see the point in keeping them as clutter when I don't ever planning on being that size again.
I do have some clothes that accommodate me at the higher range of my maintenance, so it's not like I'll suddenly have no clothes to wear if I gain 5-10 lbs.1 -
That trip to Goodwill was one of the most liberating days of my life! Donate.4
-
I donate them. I've lost enough that it'll take at least another couple of years before I get back to where I was even with an immediate full reversion to my old habits. By then the clothes will be out of style.
Also, having to buy larger clothes to accommodate my waistline should I ever get to that point again is a penalty I'm more than willing to enforce upon myself. It'll force me to make a choice of buy new clothes or to lose weight to fit into the ones I have.1 -
I donated a lot of them to the woman's shelter here in town.
It felt great and now I won't have "backups" just in case I start gaining again...nice reminder when your jeans pinch2 -
Most of mine are gone with another pile to go. Sad part is getting rid of clothes that I've bought in the last 6 months, but most were from Value Village. 1 pair of jeans that I need to get rid of but bought new ($15) and one pair of jeans I can still wear for now.
Looking for sales on jeans again. I'm wearing 40 but could fit into 38 (Yeah).
I do have one "outfit" i wont get rid of just yet. I'm dressing up the same as I did for last year Halloween. So I've got that "outfit" still. Should be pretty funny to do the side by side as I was 75 lbs heavier last Halloween.5 -
So I have gotten rid of clothes only to be that size again. After one winter I donated my winter coat with the thinking that next winter it would be so big on me. Yup, had to buy a new winter coat that year; I forget if it was the same size or bigger. And when I have lost 50 - 60 , a few different times, I just kept wearing the same clothes. No wonder no one noticed I lost weight. Oh and here's a thought - one time, long ago, I was on this program, and got down to a 5/6. I did buy new clothes but they all had elastic waists. So I started putting the weight back on and never ever felt it in my clothes.1
-
Still have saved my clothes but i tailor them as i go a long. I learned how to sew for that same purpose. Once they start looking weird, i'll probably have to get rid of them, but for now it works.1

There is a consignment shop near me for plus sizes only. She takes clothing from 14's on up. She used to just take 16's on up, but many of her customers have lost weight, so she is accommodating them. I have been taking clothing there for many years. When I take things in, I get to shop for me from the goodies that other women have brought in. Everything is clean and in good condition. When she has super sales, I buy things cheap that I can take on trips with me (Europe), and if I need space in my suitcase, I leave those items behind so I can have room for my souvenirs. I am rambling.

Dropped from 40 down to 33 at the waist when I lost 38# from 196 to 158.
The only clothes that don't fit anymore are pants and belts. Bought new pants and belts as I dropped weight. Due to vanity sizing, I wore a size 36 (men's) even though my waist was 40 at the largest and now wear a size 32 even though my waist is 33.
I really don't have that many now oversized pants and belts that I can't wear anymore. The frugal part of me abhors the idea of throwing or giving away anything that is in good condition and still potentially useful.
I've got more than enough room to keep them and I do not feel "at risk" of regaining weight just because I know they are still there.
In fact, knowing that they are there is motivation for me to NEVER gain weight to allow them to fit again. In fact, it's a ego boost to mistakenly put on one of these items only to find them too large.
So, I'm keeping them right where they are as a reminder of what I accomplished and as inspiration to maintain my weight right where it is and has been for the past 9 months.1 -
I kept a few things which were of sentimental value, and donated the rest. One decision I regret is that I earlier donated anything smaller than a size 14 "because let's face it, you will never be that small again." Well... my size 14 clothes are too big for me now, and I wish I had kept some things. But realistically they were years old, the styles were out of date, and my lifestyle needs have changed anyway. Buying all new clothes may be a pain and an expense, but it's something I needed to do.

I think my thoughts align mostly with what you shared. Thank you.0 -
I didn't buy any new clothes until I was two sizes down. I got rid of everything that was too big (bar one top that looks brilliant now when it's belted or tucked in and a pair of jeans that must have shrunk) by donating it.
I gained weight without noticing because it was easier. Now I will definitely notice if my clothes don't fit. I love my new wardrobe.... Only problem is some of my new stuff is getting a little bit sloppy looking2 -
I've gotten rid of everything as I've gotten smaller.2

I went from a size 20 to a 16 so far. I modeled all my clothes for my husband and if he said they didn't look good on me they went into a pile to sell. He likes clothes that show off my body, not hide it and he tells me all the time how good I look. So I chose to believe him and toss all my oversize stuff. ALL of it got sold. I tell myself I will never let myself get to that size again and it's pointless to keep clothes that don't fit. I used an online yard sale page on Facebook, took pictures and sold everything for a good price. To me it was worth it to get rid of stuff that is too big on me. Now I have a new wardrobe with clothes that look good on me. My husband took me shopping and helped me pick out what looks best on me. I value his opinion and he has really helped me see I don't need to his behind a tent.3
