Hi everyone. I started out on here in January this year - I needed to lose about about 170 pounds and just over 6 months later, I've lost 90 pounds. My weight loss has been good most weeks from between 2 and 5 pounds a week. 3 weeks ago I had a really good loss of 5 pounds. I do what alot of people do and weigh myself most days and I found after that 5 pounds loss, my weight has gone down a couple of pounds, then up 3 pounds, down 2 pounds and so on - ending up where I am today having lost a pound and a half in 3 weeks. I admit I've been a bit naughty lately, eating sweets and things higher in fat that I usually eat but I've never gone over my calorie intake and I've upped my exercise. I don't eat my exercise calories either. I'm exercising about an hour a day......I do kettlebell workouts and a stepper and thats worked well for the last 6 months. I'm finding it so frustrating and would really appreciate any advice because I've still got quite a long way to go!

You need to change your dietary habits. Try a different way of eating, lower your carbs, up your protein. Play around with your food habits. Plateaus suck and I literally hit one every single month. BUT, They eventually break. Keep your chin up!!

Your body might be telling you it needs a bit more food.......

Have a look at the comments made by chevvy..... In this thread

I complete agree with this but don't just focus on food change up your exercise too! I'm not sure if the science behind this is sound but it couldn't hurt - Keep your body guessing. You've been doing kettlebells and stepper try something different like some kickboxing or circuit training ( i do both low impact but they kick my butt!) I keep changing it if for no other reason that to keep boredom away!

    Good luck to you!

It's interesting to see everyone's responses, but I know from experience that sometimes you can do everything right and still stick at the same weight. For me the 'sticking' weight is around 100 kilos (220 lb) and no matter how hard I try, eating less, eating more, eating clean, eating more carbs, eating more protein, exercising more/less, whatever, my body appears to have it's own timetable about shifting from that weight. I stuck at this weight once before for 4 months(!) before I eventually started to lose again and I've been here again this time, losing tiny amounts - 200g/300g - for a month.

Is the weight you are at now the weight that your body naturally likes to be at? I know that if I let my weight creep up then 100 kilos is my 'natural' maintenance level almost. My body personally dislikes being forced below that weight and so it takes lots of effort to get below there, but once I am it's plain sailing again. I usually hit another plateau at around 90.

Just try different stuff, but don't get discouraged and give up! For me this is the hardest time, when there is no reward to keep me going and no end to what seems like endless amounts of effort. You can do it though, hang in there!

90 pounds in 7 months is a lot of weight loss in little time. While fast weight loss is what we all want, it is not the ideal way to go. Losing anything over 2 pounds a week means you are losing a substantial amount of muscle mass as well. That means those high weight loss weeks probably included a lot of muscle which is not what you want. Since I cannot see your diary, I don't know how much you have left to lose, or anything really, I can't give much specific advice. You probably need to adjust your weight loss goals down a bit in light of your progress so far.
  • Thanks for all the replies....it's a great help to know that I'm not alone here. I've still got around 80 pounds to lose. I'll definitely give some of your ideas a go! Thanks again
  • Also keep in mind that weight is not the only measurement that indicates progress. I have been stuck on a weight plateau for about 3 weeks now, but I have lost an inch from my neck and a half inch from my waist in that time, so I know that the hard work and sweat are paying off! I'd love to think that I am gaining massive amounts of muscle to compensate for weight loss, but that would probably be a little optimistic

Even if you aren't measuring various body parts, you should be able to gauge your progress based on how your clothes are fitting. If they feel baggier even though you haven't dropped any weight, then say F-U to the scale and be proud!
