Ketogenic Diet Pre-Diabetes and Ketosis

My mom is on the Ketogenic diet and she is having difficulty getting in to ketosis.
If you diabetic, how long did it take for you to get into ketosis following a 20 net carb a day diet?

    How long has she been trying and why do you think she's not in ketosis?

    How is her blood sugar doing?

    2-10 days. Get some test strips from the pharmacy.

    She's been on the ketogenic diet a week. Unfortunately, she doesn't take her blood sugar regularly since she's prediabetic.

    She's probably in ketosis now -- I ask why you think she is not because a lot of the testing methods aren't that reliable. Generally the benefits for IR come from being low carb (or extremely low carb, as with a keto diet), not specifically being in ketosis, anyway, as if you aren't eating many carbs (and she isn't at 20 net), the problem with processing carbs properly will not come up, and you naturally will have to start making ketones to fuel your body/brain when the glucose is short of the needs. Essentially, not consuming the foods that are difficult handle is a way of managing IR.

    Family with same issue...This is what we found:
    1. Yes, test strips help with affirmation and monitoring though not completely reliable. Use a good grade strip.
    2. Drink water, it actually makes a difference, helps flush the system of the fat.
    3. Double check the ratios of body fat with needed balance of the carb/fats/protein/calories. Too low fat and too high protein can stop ketosis. Calories still matter and should not be excessive.
    4. There are some calculators online that are helpful though keep in mind guessing at body fat percentage increases possibility of error in the calculations. Still worth using them if your honest about your body makeup.

    One more thing...if you use a calculator and it tells you to increase carbs to 25 or 30...do it. That is still very low and the results may surprise you.
