Don't avoid sodium (unless you have a medical reason to), your body needs it. Just know that if you do have a high sodium meal the day before weighing, you may see some water weight on the scale. If you only weigh once a week, you may want to make sure you don't have high sodium foods the day before (but again, no need to avoid it entirely), if you weigh daily as many of us do, just be aware that it can cause blips :)

    Does that help?

Eating a lot of sodium the day before weighing Day I should watch because the number can go up. I only weigh once & twice a week, Thursday & Friday morning, same time.

    Yep, you've got it :)

I have no medical condition with sodium just that it makes me look bloated the day before weighing day & I panic that it’s not fat gain just a lot of sodium.

No need to panic, it's just water weight and will go away. If you know you've eaten something really high in sodium, you can drink a bit more water (not too much) to help flush it out (handily, salty foods often make us thirsty anyway).

This is exactly why I weigh myself every day. Large and sudden jumps in weight is always water, not fat. Fat gain/loss is slow, but steady, and can go on indefinitely - water weight fluctuations are abrupt and large, but stay within a range.

Don't sweat the small things. Find out what the big things are and focus on them instead.

But you're seeing a pattern - you know that your weight goes down again - so there is no need to be concerned. I'm really just trying to suggest that you try to find the strategy that makes you least concerned.

The truth changes things ... The number that MFP sets for me is virtually impossible to hit. I've noticed that some members don't even track it. This dialogue has been extremely helpful and freeing!! I've been wondering about the weight spikes as well. Just go a new high tech scale, so I've been weighing myself everyday. I am guilty of getting way too caught up in the numbers. Thank you again to everybody who shared thoughts and let me burglarize this thread! :)

It takes food a couple of days to digest, so if water retention is your concern then watch your sodium beginning a couple of days before.
