    Persimmons are lovely! You can eat some varieties when harder but other must be soft or are terrible. You don't eat the skin. They are sweeter than tomatoes. Cut it in quarters and eat the flesh off of the skin.

    An unripe persimmon will make your mouth pucker and feel very dry. It's unpleasant and the effect lasts a while. But a ripe one is wonderful. There are some persimmons that are long like a plum tomato, and those must be soft before you can eat them.

    You can totally eat the skin. I always do.

    They're sweet, meaty, jelly-like, and juicy at the same time (given you have ripe ones, unripe ones are mouth-puckering like eating cotton balls and turn your tongue into sandpaper). They're nothing like tomatoes, they have this honey-like undertones. They're lovely.

    There are different varieties of persimmons.

    The one pictured and most commonly available is the fuyu, which is flatter and can be eaten whether hard or soft ripe or not).

    The other common variety is the hichiya which is taller than the fuyu and shaped like an acorn. It is astringent if unripened and should only be eaten when soft and ripe. This variety is the one used to make the delicious and very expensive dried persimmons called hoshigaki.
