Anyone else a former take-out/delivery food "addict?"

Take-out, delivery, and eating out may be one of my biggest weaknesses. Part of the reason I gained my unwanted weight was because I discovered courier services like Postmates and was constantly having food delivered- for the convenience and just because my favorite restaurants were available at the push of a button. Obviously, this habit was not good for my wallet or waistline, so I've made every effort to cut down. I'm proud that I only use it once every 1-2 weeks now for one meal... but it's still hard somedays. I'm trying to cook a lot more at home. My meals aren't quite as delicious as ordering sushi... but I know they're going to help me in the long-run.

Can anyone else relate?

Yeah, same boat. My sister/coworker drives to town just about every day for lunch and will bring me anything that I want. I love tacos, sushi and poutines.

I am definitely a delivery addict. I used to spend my Sunday's cooking healthy meals and then ordering out that night because I didn't want to eat anything I cooked. And then I would order delivery every day for the rest of the week because I still didn't want anything I cooked. In the end, I'd throw away all the meals I prepared. So I spent hundreds of dollars on delivery and wasted even more on groceries I wasn't going to eat.

I finally got a grip. I did a budget review and screamed at the amount of money wasted. Then I started weighing my delivery and discovered my favorite Indian curry and naan was easily 1600/1700 calories a shot! So now I've gotten myself under control for the most part. I still order once or twice a week, but I make sure that delivery is my only food intake for the day. I found I can stay under my calorie goal with Thai food...I usually hit maintenance with sushi...and Indian still pushes me above that (damn you naan!!!!)

I also stopped cooking things I didn't want to eat. Which I know sounds blindingly obvious. I kept cooking meals with heathy/superfood ingredients but ended up hating the taste results. Now I still experiment with recipes but I also make sure I have plenty of the tried and true meals readily available in case the experiment fail. Turkey meatballs have definitely saved me from falling off (or is it onto?) the delivery wagon!

Oh yeah! When I was gaining weight, I was using Grubb Hub pretty much daily. One time they messed up my order and brought 4 times what I actually ordered... that was a bad night for me. Even though I'm sticking to calories now, I still buy a lot of packaged food. I'm just not a cook, but I figure that's phase two. I needed to get under control and lose some of the weight and I'll keep progressing towards better health.

I wouldn't call it an addiction, but I was certainly eating convenience or having delivery way too often. That changed in late August when I decided to take control of my finances. I ate out twice in September and once in October. I haven't calculated the difference, but I'm sure it has saved me about two hundred dollars so far, and maintaining my weight has been very easy.

I have a Chick-fila, Burger King, Arby’s, Checkers, Wawa, KFC, Taco Bell, Dominos, Papa Johns, Wendy’s, Hardee’s, and McDonalds (as well as countless, small mom-and-pop eateries) all within 3 miles of my house - 4 of those locations are within 1/4 mile of my house... like literally can look out my window and see the establishments. Yeah, that made life super convenient. It also made it super easy to pack on the pounds!

I had quite the lazy habit for a long while, but once I realized I had a gluten intolerance it was the shake up I needed to change. Most of those places don’t have much in terms of gluten free except salads and I almost always feel like those are overpriced. Now that Chick-fila offers a gluten free bun, I’ve visited 2x in the last 3 months. That’s the only fast food I’ve had in 2017....
