Hi Everyone,

I am skipping the gym today so I can go grocery shopping. For me, grocery shopping takes up a lot of time and some energy so I wanted to know how many calories I can burn within 1 trip. I found this website that has a lot of random activities and the estimated number of calories burned per hour based on your height, weight, and gender. I wouldn't suggest putting in calories for all activities throughout the day otherwise we'd be allowed too many calories, but there's a lot of different activities to choose from.

Here is the site:

I don't know the accuracy of the calculations, but I thought others mighe find this useful and/or interesting.

Thanks for sharing! I definitely think grocery shopping (or other shopping) can be exercise if it takes up enough of your time and energy and I was disappointed when it wasn't one of the things listed on here to choose from.

I would just wear a HRM and see what it says if you have one.

To me, I feel that a trip to the grocery store is part of my daily calorie burn already configured into my daily routine much like vacuuming or working. Park really far away and walk very fast into the store, do lots of squats while choosing food of course are ways to increase the calorie burn.

Thanks for sharing, but what do you click on to find grocery shopping..???.. :flowerforyou:
  • I understand what your saying but heres the way I see it
    We always grocery shop/clean etc
AND we're overweight so should we really count that as "exercise"?
now i clean everyday, but sometimes on the weekends I do extra, like this week I moved furniture so i counted that,
if you always, say, walk to the 1/2 a mile to catch a bus in the morning, AND you've done it for years, AND you did it before MFP, ANDyour overweight, can you really count that as exercise? Or should that be considered part of your normal routine? BUT if you add something NEW to your day, such as an after dinner walk, or an exercise video, then you count that
    just me thinking out loud

    Thanks...

Comparing to my HRM calories burned this appears to be fairly accurate and appears to give an estimated net calories burned.

You can find grocery shopping under home activities. I was looking at all kinds of different links to see what was where.

I only go grocery shopping once a week. I also do most of my cleaning once a week. I think it counts as exercise if I am being active for 2 hours at a time.
I spend about an hour in the store pushing the cart, picking up several items to put in the cart, taking it out of the cart for the cashier, bagging the items and putting them back into the cart, loading everything into my truck and then bringing it inside and unloading everything.
You don't have to count it as exercise, but I don't see any reason why I shouldn't log it. I don't do this everyday, and sometimes there's moderate lifting. I just wanted to post this incase anyone else had those days where you need to go to the grocery store instead of the gym. I didn't do my shopping online or have my items delivered. I think going out and doing something should count for something.
That's also why I mentioned that I wouldn't log every activity since that would lead us to believe we could consume a lot more calories than we should within a day.

What's the difference between HMR & PEDOMETER? I HAVE a Pedometer and don't like it! Its reads less calories! !!

I think HRM would be more accurate. It measures how hard your body is working . I believe that the pedometer measures your steps throughout the day.
