Calorie deficit is how you lose weight, the keto diet is just one way to create a calorie deficit. It's is no better or worse than any other method to create a calorie deficit (unless you have a diagnosed medical condition that requires lower carb).12

It’s not magical if that is what you think. It is a macro ratio with the claim that it helps with satiety. I love eating vegetables and really missed them.3

The only advantage to keto is if you like eating that way and it makes it easier for you to stick to your calorie goals. There’s nothing magical about keto for weight loss.5

Been coaching my wife for 5-6 months now with keto. I am on it myself. She went from 167 to 148. Best part are the health benefits of normal insulin, and amazing food control. We eat 2 meals a day, breakfast and dinner. No desire for snacks or anything in between 8 am to 6pm. Feel full and happy. She is pulling out dresses she have not worn in years and is very happy to fit in them. 130 is our goal so we still have a long way but definitely on the right track with food control15

I love it! I wasn't able to eat lower calorie for long term until I tried keto, since it's higher in fat I feel fuller longer. I am really learning what my macros should be and eating all of the foods I love that keep within my macros! I've lost 30 lbs since April! 25 lbs to go to my goal!
It's really not a diet, I truly plan on eating this way forever... it's like someone deciding to become vegetarian or something, it's more of a way of eating than a diet that you stop eventually.5 -

Yep what smellie said, it’s a positive eating habit changeover, not a diet. Biggest challenge is is to become aware of refined sugars and 50 industry names used for sugar and eliminating them. The entire food supply is contaminated, from your table salt, yes salt is cut with sugar, read the label, to corn syrup in your sausage. Ridiculous. So you are forced to be a detective and eventually you switch over and find less processed foods, it’s all positive health-wise so it’s a worthwhile.14

My doctor recommended I do keto about a year and half ago and I resisted thinking I would find it too hard. Instead, I tried 3 other diets and was not able to stick to any of them. 9 weeks ago I finally gave in and started eating keto and have found it really easy! I have lost 15lbs and don't really have cravings or feel hungry that often.
As others have said it's by no means a magic diet. It still requires planning and preparing food and paying attention to what you eat, and your weight loss will be about the same pace as other diets. I think any diet can work, you just have to find the one you can stick to.7 -
This was my 90 day photo. I went from 228lbs to 200lbs and put on something like 5lbs or so of lean muscle.
I work 7 on 7 off so I went to the gym all of my 7 off days. Heavy weight training and low intensity cardio, just walking on the treadmill.14 -
I've lost weight simply calorie counting and i've lost weight calorie counting eating a keto diet. I found the keto high-fat diet is more filling on the same number of calories, but that's about it!7

I never said I thought this was some miracle diet, I didn't even call it a diet. Its a new way of life. But I have known a handful of people who have been so successful in their weightloss goals by starting the keto lifestyle, I was just curious to see if others had had the same kind of success. Thank you to those of you who responded kindly to my post15

Keto is amaaaazing! It's the only way of eating that I've ever been able to stick to a calorie deficit with. I have lost 83 pounds this year and am out of plus-size clothing for the first time in almost 15 years. I just bought a size 12 sweater last night!
The main difference keto makes for me is 1) it stops my bingeing problems and food cravings *completely*, and 2) it allows me to eat low calorie without feeling hungry pretty much ever. Now and then I will have a day where I feel a bit more hungry so I'll eat more calories, but I can usually stick to my limits without any feelings of suffering or denial.
How good the diet is for you depends on the kinds of foods you love. If you're a burgers/cheese/eggs kind of person, it might suit you better than if you're a granola/cereal/toast kind of person. On the other hand, some people try it and are surprised at how their tastes change! If you're interested, give it a go but I definitely recommend doing a lot of research first and making sure you're well-informed before you start. I really like the keto subreddit for this purpose.
Good luck! If you decide to do it feel free to add me if you want; I generally eat under 25 net carbs a day and my diary is open to friends.12 -
I just started Keto this week but was doing low carb leading up to it for a month. I was horribly sick with hyperglycemia and ended up in the ER with extreme high blood sugar at 400 the beginning of September. Just eating low carb and taking metformin, my BS came down to 200 but I really couldn't get it lower and I was still horribly sick. Since starting keto my BS numbers are right around 100-130 and I am down a total of 30 pounds since Labor Day. I'm really sticking with it now and keeping carbs around 20-30. I never got the "keto flu" as I was already so sick prior to starting. I feel like I have much more energy now too. I make an egg bake that I take to work for breakfast and sometimes lunch too with sausage, spinach, mushrooms, cheese, eggs and heavy whipping cream. Have done cabbage hot dish with ground beef, tomatoes, cheese for dinner. going to start making cobb salad too. Snacks are mini beef stix from Aldi, baby bell cheese and 1/2 serving whole pecans (from the baking section). I would say read a lot, plan your meals and snacks to stay on track and watch Youtube, My favorites are Keto Connect, Butter Bob and Keila Keto. Good luck to you!9

I don't think anybody here was saying that keto isn't a miracle diet out of any kind of bad intent. They were really just pointing out that taking in fewer calories then you expend is the key to losing weight and keto is just one way to do that.
Some people prefer keto, others prefer to control their caloric intake in other ways. The key point is that if you try keto and find it not to your taste, there are a million other things you can do to help yourself lose weight.4 -
I like how these people pop into into keto topic and start posting the it’s “all about calories montra”, which it’s not. A body metabolizes 100 cals of sugar different then a 100 cals of fat, and has a different insulin response. That’s a fact. Why don’t you people go post in the million other topics, and let us, keto folks, answer the posters questions related to it. 1500 cals on standard American diet will leave you hungry, not so on 1500 keto diet. Give it a try for few months and see for yourself.36

That's what I thought, keto is less about calories but about macros, Right? I'm doing my research so that I'm fully prepared to start. I'm giving myself til the first of the year to learn all I can and start making small changes now until then so I'm prepared to make the big leap into it at the start of the year11 -
I currently am not counting calories, just eating until I am satisfied. I find I stay full much longer as well. So I may eat lunch at 2 instead of at Noon every day. When I was eating a low fat diet which was carb heavy, I was hungry all the time and found myself eating or snacking all the time. Your sugar cravings will go away too. I don't crave it. I think more about fruit and sometimes would like to eat a honeycrisp apple now that they are in season by me. I have eaten a little bit here and there, like a few strawberries or a couple slices of apple and that seems to satisfy that sweet tooth. One keto dieter said to buy the sugar free jello from the cooler section of the store. You can spray some whipped topping on that. I'm going to get that for evenings when I might want a sweet treat after dinner. No carbs there. Be sure to eat a lot of veggies too like cucumber, zucchini, lettuce, spinach, broccoli, cauli, cabbage, celery, etc. to make sure you're getting the proper potassium and other vitamins.7

I count calories and do keto on the advice of my Dr. I am type II diabetic. I have MFP set to 1.5 lbs a weeks, but find I'm eating 1200 or less with little to no hunger or effort. In fact, this week I've moved into mostly only eating one meal a day because I just don't get hungry until dinner. I've only been on it 4 weeks, but my blood glucose levels are in the upper normal range now. I'm actually looking forward to my a1c results next month. I've lost about 10 lbs. Prior to some life issues, I'd lost 45 lbs doing a LCHF diet, but not really keto.
No, it's not some magical way to drop lbs, and I know very few keto people who think this, and yes calories have to be counted. It's very easy to over eat meat and cheese (for me at least). I'm not sure why people insist you can't have veggies. My dinner last night was a huge plate of cabbage and summer squash with some ham. I eat a lot of homemade stir fry and I even have taco salads, sometimes with low carb tortillas, sometime with just lettuce. I found a really good chicken tender recipe with almond flour that tastes better than normal ones with white flour. There are lots of keto dessert recipes too if you absolutely want something sweet. One good thing about this woe is that the sugar cravings diminish or go away all together for most people.
I feel as if I can eat like this the rest of my life and I do not really miss starches or sugars. Some people can't and some people just hate it. There is nothing wrong with either way. It does all boil down to CICO though. I just find I'm more satisfied eating my cabbage seasoned with bacon fat and butter instead of just salt and pepper. I get full faster and eat less, therefore my calorie in portion is less than my calorie out.
Check out r/keto on reddit. It's one of the best keto communities I've found.6 -
Correct mandalynn. High fat low carb macro alters how insulin ramps up in your body. Insulin is a fat storage hormone. To continue your research look up keto talk podcast, start with episode 1, tons of audio books, I just finished The Obesity Code, dr Fung does a beautiful job laying out the body mechanics of insulin resistance and how it builds up in the body over the years, how constant snacking keeps insulin up. As I’m typing this my wife is texting me about comments she is getting at work, people notice she is loosing weight.

Yup, the CICO squad is on it again. Not that CICO isn't right on the money, (this IS a calorie counting site, after all, why would we be here if we weren't following CICO?) but honestly I'm starting to find whole conversations get derailed over the multiple, identical comments - and sometimes they're condescending too for no reason.
Anyway... OP there are some really good anecdotes here, as well. I'll chime in that I did keto for about 6 weeks before switching to LCHF (just raised my net carb intake to 40g from 20g) and have lost about 30 pounds since August with another 15ish to go. I just love that I don't feel the urge to mindlessly snack anymore; I pretty much eat three fat heavy and protein rich meals everyday, about 600 calories each, and don't get that hunger pang I-need-a-snack-now-feeling I used to get all the time in between meals. My BP is significantly lower and my BS levels have normalized, even my chronic headaches are occurring much less.
The two things keto is particularly good at compared to just calorie counting: 1) High fat diets tend to be more satiating which is a great way to curb snacking and stay under your calorie goal 2) Also if you find the blood sugar crashes after eating simple carbs causes you more cravings and snacking, keto (especially if you're still getting your >25g of fiber in) will really help.12
