One for the ladies - problems losing weight with Mirena?

I've had a Mirena coil fitted for almost 3 years. When ever I gained a few lbs before having it fitted, I could easily lose it again by just sticking to MFP and doing exercise. But over the past few years (about 3 funny enough!) I have steadily gained weight and am now over a stone heavier than my 'usual' weight. No matter how rigidly I stick to MFP & no matter how much exercise I do it's just not shifting, or of it does it's only a couple of lbs & it goes back on a week or so later no matter how good I've been.
My OH was the one who connected that my gain has been since I had it fitted & after doing some research it seems quite a common problem. Just wondered if anyone else has any experience of it? I'm going to see about getting it removed as I've also been suffering some of the other possible side effects too with out realizing they were link to the Mirena also :flowerforyou:

I've always had a hard time loosing weight- I don't really attribute it to the Mirena. What I attribute to the difficulty in weight loss is having 2 kids0

I have had the Mirena for 2.5 years and have not noticed anything re: weight. I've actually lost 14lb since Oct and would probably lose more if i didn't have that pesky white wine! LOL
For me the problem with weight gain - aside from eating too much and not exercising enough was a thryoid issue - and I was on anti depressants for a couple years and I gained on them. But that was several years ago and I just let everything go on too long.
I'd talk to both your gyno and your family practitioner about the weight gain and see what they think.
Now if you have other side effects - of course remove it!
Good luck!0 -
agree with the last poster to talk with your health care provider. also, could the difficulty in losing weight be related to the fact that you are not in your 20's to early 30's anymore- mirena has a lot lower dosage of hormones that the pill, have you been on the pill before and have similar problems?
I used to have really really heavy periods before Mirena and now they are all but gone- so I like that side effect but I imagine other side effects may want some to have it removed

Thanks Ladies.
I know as we get *ahem* older it's harder to shift weight but I really do think it's more than that because I can stick to my daily calories & exercise and not lose or even gain. and yes I did gain weight on the pill, even more than I have now, quite a lot actually thinking about it and the weight only really came off after I stopped.
The other reason I was thinking of getting it removed is that I still get periods that are sometimes heavy and often painful, I suffer with lots of headaches and I feel pretty low most of the time (weight & headaches not helping!) I'm just thinking it's maybe not right for me.
Thanks for all your input x0
