Why is starting over always so hard?

It's the guilt of failure the previous round that makes it hard. We're not perfect people. So sometimes failure is part of the process. Just keep trying. You'll get there.1

I think starting over is hard because there are so many restrictions. You ( and me too) are realizing that our lifestyle is not so healthy...which doesn't mean you've failed, but it does mean we've got to make some major changes to get to our goals.
I would suggest not looking at your past as failing but instead to think, boy I had a lot of fun doing what I wanted, but now it's time to look forward to my future and my future self. What type of health do I want to be in, in 20 years from now? Do I want to be active the rest of my life, or do I want to need help going up or down stairs, with walking, etc.?
It's okay to start over; because starting over means I have a new start. Yesterday is gone and we only have to today to get it right, tomorrow will take care of itself. So be encouraged2 -
Figure out why you stopped to begin with. Maybe you were too restrictive? Tried a fad diet? Stepping on the scale too much for validation?
If you're goal is to lose weight, all you need is a calorie deficit. Read the most helpful threads. Figure out the reason you're doing this. Learn good habits, and let 'er rip.

Well for starters stop dieting. Decide to eat healthy and move your body. Choose a new lifestyle and you will never have to start over again. It's not a punishment to eat and live healthy3
