figure out why you are snacking...boredom? hunger?
hunger eat lower calorie snacks if it's putting you over or increase your current calorie goal or change what you are eating.
boredom figure out something else to do
drink more water
if looking for a sweet treat eat a sugar free mint or chew gum.1 -
Here's a few things that seem to be working for me that you could try:
Prelog your day's calories including snacks.
Decide on which snacks are worth keeping considering both calories and enjoyment. I decided cookies and Twisties (cheesy snacks) weren't worth it, but chocolate and cheesy popcorn were. Just like a budget, try to get maximum snacky bang for your calorie buck.
Decide when you are going to snack and stick to it. I limit mine to one mid-afternoon and one after dinner. I snack on fruit at other times.
Avoid eating straight from packets. I weigh my portion in a bowl and put the rest of the packet in the pantry out of sight. I know some people also put their portions in snap lock bags.
If you are constantly wanting to snack, have a look at the quality of your main meals. You might need to play around with your macros to make meals more satisfying. Simple things like adding more vegies or switching to low gi, high fibre carbs may help. Or you might need to up your protein or add more fats to your meals. Different things seem to work for different people.
In sum, for me, the most valuable things have been:
- ensuring that main meals are filling,
- understanding the calorie impact of my snacks,
- working out which snacks I really enjoy the most,
- including a little of them every day at set times.0 -
You know what's really bad? Stress eating about stress eating! Seriously, I realized yesterday that I was stress eating due to the poor choices I'd made. To counter it, I decided to work out more, do some yoga to relieve stress, and simply tell myself "no."
Sorry, that's all I've got but I hope it helps!0
