I can jog!

I started exercising again in January 2010 at a whopping 350 lbs. No way could I jog or run. Heck I had to make sure I had both feet under me to get out of the jeep.
I've been pretty consistently exercising since that January. When I started out on the treadmill I couldn't do more than 2.5 mph. I tried 3 mph at first but it was no good. Slowly, ever so slowly, I started gaining speed, 3 mph, 3.2, 3.3. 3.6. and 3.8. I also have a bad knee so patience was my duty. Then 4 weeks ago I hit 3.9 mph. Now I don't know about you folks but walking at 4 mph is tough. You are really stretching it out to do so.
Two weeks ago I thought and felt I was ready to break the 4 mph but I knew I had to jog a bit to do so. Being down 79 lbs. at the time I came in at 271 lbs. I thought maybe just a bit too heavy but still why not give it a shot. Much to my surprise I could. Now I only did it about 30 seconds to 2 minutes at a time. The 2 minutes happened because I became internally distracted and really wasn't paying attention to the display. What truly surprised me was I recovered rather fast. That was a good sign. I think the fastest I went was 5.3 mph.
That day I broke 4 mph over a 60 minute time period. Amen!
I've since have accomplished that feat outdoors. Outdoors doesn't seem to provide the same cushion as the treadmill so I've settled for 3.5 mph until I lose more weight and get better shoes.
Still though that is quite a milestone for this fat boy. Now I'm thinking 6 mph.

Great work!
If you're wanting to jog outside go to a school and use the track or jog on grass. It's much easier on the knees.
If you're going to get new shoes I highly recommend going to a running store and taking your old shoes with you. They'll analyze your old shoes. Then they watch you walk or jog before recommending shoes. You'll get the best fit and support for your body. Your knees will thank you.
Good luck in the rest of your journey.0 -

Awesome! I prefer the elliptical to a treadmill mainly because I want to save as much wear and tear on my joints as possible. I do the programs built into my elliptical, and they don't tell me miles per hour, only Reps per minute.
60 minute jog is so great. Maybe one day I'll be able to do the same0 -
Fabulous, you're making amazing progress! 6mph is a tough target though. It's certainly beyond me for long periods.
Definitely get some proper running shoes and look into C25K - you start with just 60 seconds jogging between walks.0
