Exercising at the gym as a newbie

Tomorrow will be the first day I start working out at the gym. I'm currently 210 and 5'9. I want to lose 60 pounds. My question is should I focus solely on cardio bike treadmill or strength train as well. If anyone can give me a schedule I would appreciate it. Thanls

    If it is the first time ever in a gym, and you haven't done any exercise for a while, working a couple of the cardio machines will be fine.

    Spend 5-10 min in a couple of different ones to find which you like. (I am partial to the rowing machine.)

    Don't overdo it. There is nothing worse than going at it so hard you exhaust your self and wake up unable to move the next day.

    As far as weights are concerned, find out what is available st your gym abs have some one give you a tour of the equipment. Once you have a habit of going established, find a programme you would be comfortable following.

    in general you should do both cardio and strength/resistance training.

    you just need to find out what you enjoy

    if you are new to the gym a trainer should show you round and show you how everything works.

    The gyms I've gone to have insisted on showing me around first ... I think it may be an OH&S issue. They can't just send people in if they have no idea what they are doing.

    once one of the staff members have shown you how everything works, find what you WANT to do. and do that. When i first started, 10 minutes on the elliptical KILLED ME. at 280 pounds (possibly more) it was literally ALL i could do. At my peak, i could do an hour and a half, easy. Today, I was back at the gym for the first time (really) in a year, and made it 45 minutes. I could have gone longer but had to leave for work. no way would i have made it 90 minutes though. i likely would have maxed out after about 10 more minutes, tops. i lost endurance. i knew i had. thats okay. it comes back. :)

    the more you do, the more your endurance builds.

    the point is to move, to do something.

    dont forget to try the weights, too! dont be scared of them!

    It's fine to start with cardio if that's what you're comfortable with but the sooner you mix in some resistance training, the better.
