  • Whooooa I had surgery 5 weeks ago and was scared to death after reading this thread so let me be one to say to anyone who's in my position reading this pre-op that IT JUST MIGHT BE OK.

See, I was put in the precarious position of having an interview scheduled 4 days after my surgery in another state. I couldn't reschedule the surgery nor the interview so I just had to bite the bullet. As it turned out, however, there would be no bullet to bite.

For example, the evening after the surgery, I was feeling nauseous but the pain wasn't so intense that I needed the strong painkillers they had prescribed.

2 days after, I could drive a car, albeit uncomfortably.

4 days after, I took my 90-minute flight and only got up once from the discomfort. I got through the interview which included a walking tour of the campus and nobody even questioned my posture or gait, so they couldn't have been too recognizable.

2 weeks after, I had my drain removed and was walking normally and could sit down comfortably for extended periods.

4 weeks after, I was jogging and engaging in light exercise comfortably.

Now here we are 5 weeks later, I still have a sizable incision scar and try to be delicate with it as much as I can, but I've been back to living a normal, pain-free life for weeks. So if you're as scared as I was that they're going to tear you a new one (which they are), just know you might be just fine.

    As Aaron Rodgers says, R-E-L-A-X.

Ugh the dreaded cyst, i had a bad one a few years ago had to be taken into the emergency room on saturday night and lie in agony on a stretcher on in the emergency hallway until i could be operated on. Not only is it a slightly embarrassing but very painful, however once i had surgery it was such a relief. I could not do anything much in the way of exercise for the next week however but mine healed well and rather fast in about 2 weeks, i was fortunate to be living in New Zealand where i community nurse would come and change the dressing each day which is a lot less humiliating than someone else doing it.

I feel your pain, hang in there.

Until the day I gave birth, THIS seriously was my worst fear. Having another pilonidal cyst coming up again. Until the day I gave birth, that was honest to God, the worst pain I'd ever been in, in my entire life. For two days before it ruptured, I had a fever (have no idea how high, I wouldn't let anyone take it). It got to the point where I couldn't walk from the bed to the bathroom on my own because the pain was so severe. If I turned over in the bed, I would scream in agony. My cyst was the size of about a golf ball cut in half. Needless to say, the rest was inside of my body, and went six inches deep into a tunnel. I had been alternating with a heating pad and ice pack, which is what made it rupture.

I pulled the ice pack off, and it was covered with blood, and some horrible foul smelling fluids I couldn't identify. I got up off of the couch and tried to hobble to the bathroom while it leaked all the way. I will NEVER forget that stench. It was absolutely horrible. I mean, there is nothing like it. I imagine it's what a rotting corpse smells like. My best friend and cousin had stayed home from school that day to take care of me.

My mom and aunt got to the house in a matter of minutes and took me to the ER. They gave me 4 shots of Mepergan in my hip trying to stop the pain, but it didn't touch it. Instead of putting me to sleep, *I hadn't eaten or had anything to drink in *literally* days*, they sliced me open in the ER. We're not talking lancing it just to let it drain, we're talking, they cut the entire diameter or the golf ball sized cyst off, and opened it right on up. I was only 14 years old. I remember holding onto that bed screaming and begging them to stop. The smell was so horrible I thought I was going to throw up, the pain was so bad I didn't know if I was going to stay conscious. My best friend has blocked this out. She was in the ER waiting room, and was in tears. She could hear me screaming and begging them to stop, to please stop cutting me, to just stop the pain. To this day, she has no memory of this.

It took me well over 3 months to heal. I had a friend of my family's who was an RN that came to the house every day for over a month to change my packing. That was miserable. It was VERY painful, even when I took my pain meds first, it was painful. At 14, I was told no sports. No cheerleading. No volleyball. No tennis. No softball. No anything where I might fall, stretch, rip, or tear that skin. It could irritate it and cause another cyst to form. That was traumatizing to me. The thoughts of that cyst coming back and having to go through all that again, I couldn't deal with it. On top of it, being told I couldn't do any of the things I wanted to do in high school was heartbreaking.

I was a kid, and it hurt like hell. It took a LONG time to heal, BUT, I'm now 36 years old, and *knocks on wood* it's NEVER returned. I'm praying it will never EVER come back. However, I've been through a hell of a lot worse, since then, so I no longer live in fear of the ol' pilonidal cyst or it's pain, but I sure don't want another one. They aren't any fun. I feel for anyone who's got one, survived one, or suffering with one.

Hey guys, so im in the same boat. I had my surgery last Thursday so its been over a week now. Yesterday and today ive noticed the wound is feeling really itchy. Anybody feeling itchiness on the wound after surgery? I have a nurse who comes in every night and changes my gauges and stuff and she said the itchiness is normal as it means that its healing. Im just getting worried and hoping its not infected.

I had mine operated on 10 years ago. My surgeon was terrible too because it got infected and gave me the wrong medication so it left a very large scar too. I’m still a little embarrassed by it. But I feel as though it is coming back after all this time which concerns me. It was a very irritating procedure to take care of as you have to lie on your stomach so much. But I was lucky enough to have my mum help me every step of the way. The good thing was I was eager to get up and move around so I did try my best to eat healthy but sometimes instant food is much easier than having to move around and potentially cause the healing process to slow down.

While it’s a terrible procedure, it’s best to concentrate your efforts on getting better and making sure it’s taken care off 100%, no infections no pain etc. once it’s healed you’ll feel bigger better and more confident than ever and your diet/exercise will not have suffered :) slow and steady wins the race! Best of luck :) xx

I have read about your experiences and I feel for you all. I haven't been through it but my son had the procedure done when he was in high school. It was also left as an open wound which terrified me. The cyst was infected before he had surgery and had a definite odor. My husband bravely changed the dressings and I would diligently remind him to wash up before he touched the gauze to repack it. Thankfully, the area healed well and he never had an infection.
His recovery was fairly quick. He never complained about pain prior to the surgery or afterward. Believe it or not, he insisted on returning to school a few days later. I couldn't imagine sitting in a desk for hours but he seemed fine. His cyst was the size of a golf ball so I can't imagine why he wasn't in more pain. It's been about 8 years since he had surgery and so far, it hasn't come back.
I wish you all the best of luck with your recovery. Take time to give your body time to heal and try to stay positive too! Good luck!
