Frustrated and Discouraged

Hi All!
Well, this is my fourth week of eating right and working out! In the first three weeks I lost 14 pounds... However, this week has been exceptionally hard. Let me set the scene:
1. I have major shin splints and while on the treadmill it sometimes can be so painful that I'm forced to stop.
2. Because I'm over the weight limit on my treadmill, the motor doesn't work. With that, I physically have to move the belt with my feet and legs which only makes my shin splints even worse.
3. This is the first week where I have decided not to weigh myself every day. I have been known to be very obsessive over losing weight in the past, and I'm trying so hard not to be that way anymore. So because of that, I've decided to weigh myself every Friday.
Here's the problem with this fourth week. For some reason, my shin splints are way worse than they've ever been. When I first started I had to take a one minute break at the 10 minute mark of my 20 minute workout. This week, because my shin splints have been so bad, I've been taking three or four breaks after just a few minutes!!!! It makes me so frustrated that I actually cry while working out! My body can keep going, I'm not out of breath, but my legs just won't have it because I'm over working them.
Also, I dislocated my left knee a couple years back, and when I was in college I fractured my right ankle and there's still a piece of bone left in my cartilage. Put those two together as well and it doesn't make for a very fun workout.
Add that to me not weighing myself every day and I just feel like I'm gaining it all back, and I’m not eating healthy enough and I'm not doing enough to lose the weight. I just feel disgusting and like a complete loser for not being able to work out like I have been in the past.
Regardless, I still get up every morning and try to do what I can. For the first time in my life I've seen the numbers on the scale go down instead of up, and I just want to keep seeing it! I'm very nervous about my Friday weigh in though... On Sunday I was 316 pounds.... I don't want to get on the scale on Friday and see that I'm only 315. Or, heaven forbid, I'm over 316. I know I'm over analyzing it - but... I'm just really frustrated and discouraged.
I would walk/jog around my neighborhood, but I definitely do not live in a safe place.
Oh well, if you've made it this far, thank you so much for listening.... any words of wisdom or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Keep it up! If you belong to a gym - get over on the bike. If not, go to the mall (leave the credit cards in the car :laugh: ). You will make it over this bump. That's all it is - just a little bump in the road. When you can't walk, do a little exercise routine at home - a video - some milk jug curls - anything. When exercise becomes part of your routine, you will wonder how you functioned without it:bigsmile:0

Hmm...I was going to suggest walking in your neighborhood, but if you say it's not safe then maybe you can walk with a friend? Or do you have a dog you can take? And try not to freak out about only weighing in one day. I completely understand because sometimes I get so focused on weighing everyday, but just think about how you'll see more results if you only weigh in once a week. And if you go over, don't worry. Everyone struggles and everyone has their weak moments. Just get back on track and move on. You're changing your life. There's gonna be ups and downs, but in the end it'll all be worth it. As far as the shin splints go, can you buy new shoes? Tape your shins? Ice? Those things have worked for me in the past. Don't worry so much hun. You can do it and we're all behind you!

It's true though - since this is the fourth week, it's become part of my life - and I have no idea how I lived before actually working out! LOL You're so right.
I get up to work out in the mornings and would be fine with folowing a video, or doing some work with weights - but i just feel that it's not enough. (And again - this may be the obsessive dieter talking) but I honestly feel like after 15 minutes of fast walking on the treadmil, and then I go into my room to do jumping jacks, run in place, crunches, I just feel like I'm not working hard enough to make a difference. All because of my stupid shin splints! LOL

YOU CAN DO IT!!!!! Just keep up the good work. You are making the first step and you WILL see results...it just may take a little while for your body to get used to the good things you are doing to it! You have no idea how much your post means to me. I know that in the grand scheme of things, it's not that big of a deal if I go over, or if I don't lose 5 pounds in 5 days.... You're right in that I am changing my life, and I have a lot to lose. I guess I just need to be patient and accept the fact that I'm not going to change overnight!

Really sound like you need to find a new exercise routine, you shouldn't be in that much pain while working out.........I know it sounds awful, I've had to do it myself, but would you try swimming, even water workouts???? The idea of putting on a swimsuit in public is not something that I like to do, but it's an non weight bearing workout that's great for your entire body, and there are definitely other people there who are there for the same reason and feel just as uncomfortable to be in a swimsuit. It's just an idea, I'm sure there are others, but you really shouldn't be in this much pain! Hope you can find something else to keep you going, you are doing so awesome!!! I'd hate to see you have to stop because you've injured yourself.0

I get shin splints pretty bad as well on my treadmill, and since I felt that was the only "real" workout I got, if they started hurting I would use that as an excuse to not work out. Now I have found several very good workout videos that I use in place of the treadmill. In fact, I try to limit my treadmill to a couple days a week because of the pain it can cause. Try Tae Bo or go on Amazon and read reviews on different videos and pick one that suits your needs. I got a couple that KICK MY BUTT!0

Hi there, I have a knee and ankle problem and know where you are coming from
I have (actually thats had now - different story) a nintendo wii and used to go on the sports package that it comes with and do the boxing for about 30 mins a day - its great fun, completely tiring but gives you one hell of a work out!!!!!
I would also suggest some sort of low impact sport (swimming is great if you can get a weightloss class) I also agree that Tae Bo is a good dvd to get- I hate treadmills because I think that they can cause more joint problems to people of a larger build - our bodies are not designed (yet) to put that amount of weight and pressure on the joints. I have used an elliptical (crosstrainer) machine - kind of like a cross between skiing and a stepper and it hurts like hell to start with but it works.
hope that helps - keep going 14lbs is great, and every lb lost is a positive thing, it may not be 4lbs a week but who cares!!!!! its weight coming off

It has a lot of useful information regarding shin splints. Also, I found applying biofreeze during the day helped alot.
If you are in that much pain while walking I would certainly recommend another form of low stress exercise until you've had time to heal. I don't think this is a case of where "working through the pain" is a good idea. You are probably just delaying your healing.
The other post have mentioned swimming, stationary biking, etc. I agree with those ideas.

It's so good to know that people can relate to be honest.... I actually have been looking into some DVDs and I really appreciate the words of support! You all are so right and now it's just a matter of changing my work out habits!

somehow i found your post, and had to comment. please hang in there! you're doing so great! i hate that feeling, that feeling of not wanting to weigh yourself and feeling so low about the whole thing. It's horrible and i get so terribly depressed. And when I feel like that it's so hard to get out of. I feel like it's easiest to continue what I'm doing, no matter if that is eating right and exercising or eating terribly and not exercising.
anyways, i just wanted to tell you to hang in there that you are doing so well. you're going to be just fine!

Like I stated above, I actually have been looking into some DVD's at your suggestion and the great news is that Netflix also offers them! So, i can find a DVD and try it out before actually buying it! Thanks again for all the help, I really appreciate it....

Thank you so much for your posts! I appreciate it so much... the support on this site has been completely overwhelming but I can't praise it enough!!! You're right in that as long as I'm still exercising and watching what I eat, I'm on the right track!!!
