What are some good exercises to shed/time belly fat besides sit ups!?

Nothing. You cannot exercise fat away (no way to spot reduce). The only thing you can do is keep a calorie deficit and let nature take it course. Your genetics will determine where you lose it first.4

You can't target which fat the body loses, unfortunately. By doing abs exercises, you will however make sure that once the fat does go away, your stomach looks good
Losing fat is done by consuming fewer calories than you burn - but the body decides which fat goes away when. Sorry!1 -

Sit-ups might give you nice strong hip flexors though.

Indeed. Full ROM situps are rough on the back.
