How do you know if an increase is "just water weight" or normal fluctuation vs. a true weight gain?

you dont i guess...its just sense that you cant put on 2lbs of fat in one day or 2lbs of muscle overnight...women usually retain water during or justbefore menses as well0

I weight myself daily & I gain & lose about 2-3 lbs daily but by friday morning its gone so if I have a weight gain for more than a week thats when I count it a (real) gain0

THIS!! Besides, you have to be eating surplus of calories to gain fat, and that usually holds true for gaining muscle as well. When the scale pops up large amounts after a weekend or vacation, most of it is usually water.0 -
If I have a high sodium day, you can bet I'll have a 2-3lb gain overnight. All it takes is a day with no diet coke, and no salty snacks and I'm back down.0
